Two free seminars on the secrets of the brain at La Nau

The Escuela Europea de Pensamiento Luis Vives will organise two seminars at Cultural Centre La Nau of the Universitat de València. They are included within the series “Secrets of Our Brain.” On Monday 21 of May, biologist Cristina Gil will teach “The History of Stem and Daughter Cells and how to Organise our Brain.” On Thursday 24 of May, the professor Lucía Hipólito will address “The Emotional Dimension of Pain: The Impact of Opioids Addiction.”

Both seminars will take place at the Seminar Rooms at 4 and 6 p.m. You can fulfil the free registration here

The series on neuroscience The Secrets of Our Brain” will gather at La Nau important national and international figures on the field until June. This initiative is organised by the Office of the Vice-principal for Culture and Sport of the Universitat de València. Particularly, the professors of the University Isabel Fariñas and Federico Pallardó are in charge if the event, which is stablished within the framework of the Escuela Europea de Pensamiento Luis Vives.

The first seminar is The History of Stem and Daughter Cells and how to Organise Our Brain”. Cristina Gil, a biologist and researcher of the Universitat de València, will talk about the relationships of stem cells and their “daughters” (neurones and glial cells). She will address the mechanisms that stem cells use to diversify their progeny and how alterations in these processes are linked to neurological disorders.

The second seminar is The Emotional Dimension of Pain: The Impact of Opioids Addiction”. It will be taught by the professor Lucía Hipólito, coming from the Department of Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Technology and Parasitology of the Universitat de València. She will address the effects of pain on affective states and how pain can be a factor that increases the vulnerability to suffer drug-use disorders or fall back in consuming them, no matter if they are illegal or legal, such as alcohol. The series will conclude in June with two additional seminars and two more conferences. 

The Escuela Europea de Pensamiento Luis Vives is a cultural project promoted by the Office of the Vice-Principal for Culture and Equality and managed by the General Foundation of the Universitat de València. It aims to reflect and invite to participative and critical debate on current issues. In addition, the School counts with the participation of other institutions of the public administration and civil society: The President of the Valencian Government, the Valencian Department of transparency; the Valencian Department of Education, Research, Culture and Sport; the Academy of the Valencian Language; the Alfons el Magnànim Institute; the European School of Humanities and Caixa Popular.
