The Universitat de València carries out a live stream of the eclipse of 12 August

The UV broadcast, with two cameras, was carried out from the cupola of the Principal’s Office of the academic institution, which was the former Astronomical Observatory of the UV, and it started at 7.30 p.m., so that it reached the moment when the moon started to cover the solar disk, at 7.38 p.m., until the sunset at approximately 9 p.m.

One of the cameras was connected to a telescope and continuously showed up close the Sun, the other one showed the city of Valencia as it is seen from this cupola, with the Sun above it. This way, the process of how the light was progressively getting dark as the solar disk was getting covered could be observed.

The broadcast from the Principal’s Office featured Javier Díez, specialist in astronomical video, and it can be re-experienced on the channel of the Astronomical Observatory of the UV.

The eclipse of 12 August is part of a series of astronomical phenomena that we will be able to experience in a short time, since in 2027 there will be another total solar eclipse in the Iberian Peninsula, and in 2028 a third eclipse, annular, which we will also be able to see from Valencia.

The Universitat de València participated institutionally in the committee of the eclipse, which was created by the Generalitat Valenciana to coordinate the actions over this event. Beatriz Ramírez participated from the UV representing the Aula del Cel. Besides, as a result of this collaboration, some videos of didactic proposal have been made, which can be watched clicking here.

Moreover, the UV has conducted some conferences on the eclipse and how to watch it with security, held by Amelia Ortiz and Fernando Ballesteros (Astronomical Observatory), and also by Juan Fabregat, Enric Marco, Iván Martí, and José Carlos Guirado (researching staff and technician in the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics). Some of these conferences took place in the following places: Archaeological Museum of Jávea, Burjassot Campus and Botanical Garden –both from the UV–, the Octubre Contemporary Cultural Centre (OCCC), and in the cities of Benetússer, Utiel, Alfarrasí, and Paterna.

Additionally, the UV offered glasses at the La Nau Cultural Centre, the Botanical Garden, the Principal’s Office, and the Espai Vives, in order to watch the eclipse safely.
