The University of Valencia (UV) has improved its position in the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking, updated Wednesday, and is the sixth Spanish higher education centre, in addition to the first Valencian one. The institution has advanced in all the measured indicators, especially in citations of scientific publications and joins the group of the 500 best universities in the world.

The University of Valencia has moved up and ranks 6th and 8th of Spain (last year was it ranked 8th-11th); and has been placed among the 252 best in Europe (among the first 287 the previous edition of this ranking). On a global scale, the UV has moved up the 401-500 range, one hundred positions regarding the section it occupied between September 2017 and September 2018.

The Times Higher Education ranking measures the quality of teaching, research, appointments, international perspective, reputation and income from industry derived from university activity. This year it ranks a total of 1,258 institutions worldwide, 156 more than in the previous edition. Among them, 38 are Spanish.

Where the Universitat of València is best placed and where it has advanced the most is in citations of scientific publications. The institution is located in the fourth decile. Also in the teaching quality indicator the University has improved significantly. This item measured the reputation of the institution, the proportion of student number per teaching staff; the number of doctorates awarded in relation to the number of degrees; or the institutional revenues in relation to the teaching staff.

Globally, the THE rankings are headed by the British universities Oxford and Cambridge and the American Stanford. In Europe, the Imperial College London ranks 3rd, whereas in Spain, only the Pompeu Fabra, the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the University of Barcelona, the University of Navarra and the Autonomous University of Madrid are the only ones ranking higher than the Universitat de València. In the case of other Valencian universities, the Universitat Politècnica, the Jaume I of Castellón and the Miguel Hernández of Elche are in the 601-800 range of the world rank.

The Times Higher Education ranking, founded in 2004, uses Elsevier-Scopus as a bibliometric data provider. The total score uses the following indicators: teaching (30% of the total value), research (another 30%), citations (30%), industry revenues (2,5%) and international perspective (7.5%).
