The University of Valencia (UV) and the Guttmann Institute have signed an agreement within the framework of the Institute¨Participa¨project, a centre dedicated to the refurbishment of people with spinal cord injury. The agreement, which involves the researcher Joan Úbeda Colomer, professor at the Department of Physical and Sports Education (UV) and Joan Saurí, from the institute, will work on the development, design and implementation of programmes to promote active lifestyles aimed at people with disabilities to improve their well-being, quality of life and social participation.
This study also focuses on identifying the barriers these people face to participate in society. ‘The collaboration was born in the framework of a first project of which I have recently been principal investigator, the project ‘Muévete con lesión medular’, funded by the Valencian Department of Education, Universities and Employment of the Generalitat Valenciana, which aimed to study the factors associated with the physical activity of adults with spinal cord injury, as well as to develop a process of co-design of resources based on scientific evidence to facilitate the adoption of active lifestyles by this group,’ explains Joan Úbeda.
During this project, there was close collaboration with the Guttmann Institute, through Alex Castan, physiotherapist and physical-sports educator at the hospital. The two parties wished to formalise this collaboration and extend it over time with this agreement.
