In addition, the Universitat is the first Valencian centre in this classification that also analyses the impact produced by the 100 best European academic centres on the economy of the continent and the world.

In Reuters Top 100 Europe's Most Innovative Universities 2019, five Spanish universities are among the 100 most innovative European universities. They are the Universitat de Barcelona (position 75), the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (81), the Universitat de València (92), the Universitat Politècnica de València (95) and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (number 100 in Europe).  In Europe, the first three universities in the ranking are KU Leuven Belgium, the University of Erlangen Nuremberg Germany and Imperial College London United Kingdom.

In order to establish this ranking of the most innovative European universities, Reuters News has relied on data compiled by Clarivate Analytics and various of its research platforms such as Incites, Web of Science, Derwent Innovations Index, Derwent World Patents Index and Patents Citation Index.

In terms of the methodology used by Reuters Top 100, the volume and success of patents, the number of world patents and citations and the impact they have received have been taken into account. Also the percentage of patents cited, the impact of article citations on patents, the impact of article citations for industry, the percentage of articles collaborating with industry and the total number of articles in the Web of Science Core Collection. These indicators are weighted equally, except for the Impact of Patent Citation and Percentage of Patents Cited, with 50% weight each.
