Universitat de València, along with the local police, has created a Chair of Citizen Protection PROTECPOL. Its presentation will take place this Friday (03.06) in the historical building of La Nau. The chair is born out of the will of these institutions to organise cultural activities of learning, research and scientific outreach. The aim is to offer insight into the subject of Citizen Protection in the city.

UV´s principal, Esteban Morcillo, along with the president of the Police Foundation and councillor of Citizen Safety of Valencia´s city council, Sandra Gómez, vice principals Guillermo Palao (Internationalisation and Cooperation) and Jorge Hermosilla (Local Participation and Outreach) and the chairperson, Paz Lloria, will preside over the presentation of the First Local Police Chair in Valencia whose main objective is “that the knowledge produced at UV has wider applications, that it influences the Local Police, and that all the information managed by the Police can also influence the University through new research” states the principal.

The councillor Sandra Gómez has highlighted that the benefit is mutual and has explained the institutional collaboration between Valencia´s city councill and UV: “it creates a constant communication channel between the university and the police” she concluded.

After the presentation, a round table will take place, moderated by the director of the PROTECPOL Chair, Paz Lloria (the Department of Criminal Law), in which the participants will be José Vicente Herrera, Chief Inspector of the Local Police, and Javier Boix Reig, chair of UV´s Criminal Law department.

The Chair aims to create an academic platform which reflects on safety in the city of Valencia, and which conducts statistical analyses of what occurs and the general opinion of the city´s safety as reported by the residents.  There is also the idea of designing a General Plan which would compile statistical information and programmes of scientific outreach with the help of local campaigns.

There are many diverse subjects to discuss, such as security and standard of living, road security, environmental conflicts, food safety, etc.  Universitat de València has many experts on the above subjects, experts who offer a “comprehensive vision”, assures the Chair director, Paz Lloria.
