Joan Baptista Peset Aleixandre was one of the most renowned figures of the Valencian academic and scientific life of the 20th century. Doctor, researcher, and principal of the Universitat de València during the Second Spanish Republic, he also stood out for his commitment to public health, education, and democratic values. Professor of the Faculty of Medicine at the Universitat de València, he was the dean between 1930 and 1931, and the vice-principal between 1931 and 1932. That year he was elected principal, a position he held until 1934, when he accepted his resignation. After that, in 1936, he was elected deputy in València and participated in the last session of the Republican Courts, in 1939. Arrested in the harbour of Alicante while he was trying to take up exile after the Spanish Civil War, he underwent two court-martials and was executed on 24 May 1941 in Paterna.

With this homage, the Universitat de València reclaims democratic memory and remembers the human, scientific and institutional career of Joan Baptista Peset, considered as a symbol of the defence of public university, knowledge, and freedom.
