A conference on the university as an inclusive space has been programmed on the occasion of Trans Day of Visibility and as part of the lecture series started by Diversitats. The event will take place today at 17:00 through BB Collaborate. Prior registration is required through diversitats@uv.es.

The lecture will be given by Siobhan F. Guerrero Mc Manus, biologist, science philosopher and researcher at the CEIICH-UNAM and it will address two main issues. On the one hand, how to imagine inclusive spaces for trans people in general, as well as for the bulk of identities of gender and sexual diversity that are nowadays standing up for their rights. One of the main ideas that we want to communicate is that human rights are not a zero-sum game and that one group’s progress doesn’t result in a setback for others. On the other hand, these ideas need to be brought into educational spaces. Problems such as bullying show that we are still far from being able to claim that universities are inclusive and safe spaces. With this in mind, the lecture will address the question of the role of universities in creating a human rights-based culture that fosters inclusive spaces.

The University of Valencia, through Diversitats, promotes the recognition of the realities and rights of the LGTBI community by commemorating their most relevant international days. There are days that celebrate and recognise the realities of each of the letters that make up the LGTBI acronym, among others.

Trans Day of Visibility, celebrated on March 31, aims to raise awareness and visibility about the realities of trans people and the discrimination caused by transphobia, among other factors. This is the first session of a lecture series started by Diversitats, named visibilitats, written in lowercase and plural. It will continue on April 26, Lesbian Visibility Day, which commemorates equal rights for lesbians and helps to make their realities visible, including in the university setting.

Moreover, videos of photographs depicting some of the terms related to gender diversity, identity and expression from the Ministry of Health's 2018 "Glossary of terms on affective-sexual diversity" will be shared on Diversitats' social networks, especially those run by volunteers from the multi-coloured spaces of Diversitats. These photographs have been taken by students of the subjects "Art and visual education teaching at primary school” of the University of Valencia and “Photography procedures" of the University Miguel Hernández, led by professors Amparo Alonso-Sanz (UV) and Bibiana Soledad Sánchez Arenas (UMH), members of the CREARI research group for cultural pedagogies, within the framework of project GV/2020/069 "Raising awareness on gender equality and sexual diversity through artistic interventions in university contexts". The visual glossary aims to widen the university community’s imagination, vocabulary and knowledge on affective-sexual and gender diversity. The full video is available here.
