The Universitat de València has created the Joint Unit for Biotechnological Management of Plagues (UMGBP) with the Valencian Institute of Agricultural Researches (IVIA). Creating a joint unit will improve joint researches among institutions and the integration of new technologies applied to plague control. It will ease its transference in the Agrarian sector.

Creating a Joint Unit will optimise the use of infrastructures, equipment, services and human resources among entities. It will improve the implementation of joint research and development projects in areas of common interests and fields in which supplementary resources are produced.

The unit was created thanks to the Biotechnological Plague Control Group (CBP: http://www.cbp.com.es/) of the Universitat de València and the Entomology Unit of the Vegetal and Biotechnological Protection Centre of the Valencian Institute of Agricultural Researches (IVIA: http://www.ivia.gva.es/centro-de-proteccion-vegetal-y-biotecnologia).

“It is the perfect institutional framework to face the agricultural management of plagues from a multidisciplinary point of view. One of its main objectives is to bring closer basic research on agricultural plagues to the final user. It takes into account the health and food safety necessities demanded by 21st century consumers” states Joel González Cabrera, a researcher from the Biotechnological Plague Control Group.

The Universitat de València has an unwavering commitment with agricultural research. It is one of the best 15 units in Europe and it is the 51st at an international level according to the last National Taiwán University Ranking (NTU). On the other hand, IVIA is a centre of reference on agricultural research in Spain, and the most important in the Valencian Community. Because of this, the creation of UMGBP will increase the leadership of the University in this area and will contribute to strengthen the scientific activity of IVIA.

The Unit was adopted by plenary of the Valencian Government on January 26. The governing council of the Universitat de València ratified it on March 27.
