The University of Valencia is the sixth most transparent Spanish higher education centre and, together with the University of Alicante, the first in the Valencian Community, according to the Study on the Transparency of Spanish Universities, published this January. The Valencian centre complies with 71.97% of the 132 proposed indicators, in a ranking that analyses 74 universities, both public and private.

The study published by Dyntra, a collaborative platform that works on the measurement and management of open government in organisations and for civil society, also shows that the centre has improved its transparency by 13.64% since August 2018. Universities in Burgos, Valladolid, Murcia, Zaragoza and Cadiz lead the classification.

By segments, where the University of Valencia is most open is in public communication (86% of the total possible), where 19 of the 22 proposed indicators are met, followed very closely by contracting services (80%), with 12 of the 15 points earned.

In the economic and financial section (78%), the academic institution has already reached 7 of the 9 milestones proposed by the study, while it reaches 44 of the 66 in the institutional area (67%). In citizen participation and collaboration (65% compliance), the Valencian academic centre has already reached 13 of the 20 transparency indicators.

“Transparency is, as a public institution, an obligation that we serve convinced of the value of accountability, but it is also a reputational asset that allows to being distinguishable as a prestigious university. This has been historically understood by the government teams of the Universitat de València and the result of this study only confirms that the steps have been taken in the right direction”, said Joaquín Aldás-Manzano, vice-rector of Strategy, Quality and Technologies of the Information of the University of Valencia.

Of the 74 universities analysed, only 62% pass the transparency evaluation. The public ones are the most open, with 86% compliance (43 out of 50 obtain a percentage equal to or greater than 50%) compared to the private ones, with 13% compliance (only 3 out of the 24 evaluated reach 50%).

Some of the indicators proposed in the Study on the Transparency of Spanish Universities are the existence of the academic and professional curricula, and remunerations of the people who run the institution, both the rector team and the general secretariat, management and deanships of the faculties; the economic and budgetary information, as well as the existing debt or the relationships and operations with suppliers and contractors. Also the granted subsidies and grants, the operation of an electronic site or indicators on information, attention and degree of commitment to the student body. All the indicators refer to the corresponding link of each university.
