The University, headquarter of the ninth edition of the International Bayesian Summer School
The Universitat de València hosted the ninth edition of the Valencian International Bayesian Summer School (VIBASS9), which took place from 6 to 9 July. It consists of an international summer school organised by the research group in Bayesian Inference VABAR of the UV, which allows students to introduce themselves into this maths and statistic method. The event took place at the School of Engineering (ETSE).

This year’s edition was directed by professorRubén Amorósof theUniversitat de València, and with the support of the Faculty of Maths and the ETSE. It had the attendance of 35 students from different countries. The University of Castilla-La Mancha, the Universitat Politècnica de València, the research centres of Biomathematics and Statistics Scotland and CIRAD of France participated as well in the organisation.
The training is structured in both distinguished parts. Sessions from Monday, 6 and Tuesday, 7 consisted in a basic introduction to Bayesian statistics, both methodologic and applied. This 12-hours course included conceptual and practical sessions. Regarding the practical part, it was designed so students could consolidate and apply the knowledge of the theoretical sessions.
The second part had a more specialised nature and took place on Wednesday, 8 and Thursday, 9. This 12-hours course was dedicated to the Bayesian analysis of longitudinal data set and survival with INLA. It was lectured by researcher Denis Rustand, member of the National Institute of Health and Medical Research, Bourdeaux Population Health Research Center, located in France.
The Bayesian statistics became a tool every time more useful for the decipherment of complex phenomena. Their models, based on the Bayes’ Theorem, enable to quantify the uncertainty and to update predictions while new evidence are being incorporated.
