Under the title “The future of Weather, Climate and Water through generations”, the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and the Spanish Government, in collaboration with the World Meteorological Organisation and the University of Valencia, organise on Thursday March 23 the World Meteorological Day in the Valencian Community. The event, in the Assembly Hall of the Rectorate building, will be at 12 noon, with the participation of Rosa Donat, Vice-Rector for Innovation and Transfer of the University of Valencia; and Jorge Tamayo, AEMET regional director.

Thus, at 12:15 p.m., they will deliver diplomas to the AEMET Agency collaborators who have been awarded, who are Vicent Úbeda Francés, observer from Fontanars dels Alforins, Vicente Palomar Clemente (Bejís), Antonio Aliaga Tortajada (Alginet), Manuel Ortiz Rufete (Elche) and Juan Peiró Caballero (Xeresa).

At 12:30 p.m. the conference “The future (and the past) of weather, climate and water through generations” will take place, given by the State meteorologist Ernesto Rodríguez Camino, and at 1:15 p.m. the staff of the AEMET Delegation retired in 2022-2023 will be recognised. Then, the act will be closed and a wine of honour will be served.

The World Meteorological Day 2023 is celebrated as the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) reaches its 150th anniversary. During this period, the entity has shared information with the national Meteorological and Hydrological Services, which has made it possible to collect and standardise this data that supports current meteorological forecasts. This work, with a scientific and technological vision, has translated into numerous services for today’s society and for future generations.

In the Valencian Community, the social presence of the Meteorological Service has been constant since the creation of the Valencia and Alicante observatories in 1859. The weather observation network extended the presence of the AEMET to a large number of towns in the Community since 1911 and currently it has 239 observatories maintained by altruistic personnel. Among others, the AEMET in the Valencian Community provides support to aeronautics, with meteorological offices at the Valencia, Alicante and Castellón Airports, civil protection or navigation.

The Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit of the University of Valencia collaborates in the event, as well as the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECyT).
