The University of Valencia, the best Valencian higher education institution and fifth in Spain, according to the Best Global Universities ranking

The University of Valencia (UV) has improved internationally in the Best Global Universities research ranking and advances 24 positions, to be ranked 237 in the world. In Europe, the institution climbs to place 108, after improving ten positions; in Spain it remains the fifth best; and is the first Valencian one. In addition, it is ranked number 111 in the world in regional research reputation, after improving 29 positions compared to 2018. By subject, UV is the first of the Valencian Public University System in 15 of the 19 subjects analysed.

The Best Global Universities ranking is prepared by the U.S. News & World Report magazine to respond to the growing demand of American students who plan to enrol in universities outside their own country. It analyses institutions in more than 80 countries that have been classified based on 13 indicators that measure their academic performance in research and their global and regional reputation.

Regarding the ranking indicators, the University of Valencia stands out in regional research reputation (position 111 in the world) that analyses the reputation of the best universities in each region regarding research for 5 years. In addition, in total citations, the institution advances to world position 199 and also in number of highly cited articles (among the most cited1%), where it has moved to world position 194 from 225 in 2018.

On a global level, the University of Valencia reaches world position 237, which places it fifth for the fourth consecutive year, after the University of Barcelona, the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the Pompeu Fabra University and the Autonomous University of Madrid.

By subject, the University of Valencia is among the 300 best in the world in 14 of the 19 areas analysed and stands out among the 200 best in the world in Agricultural Sciences (world position 13), Physics (position 126), Geosciences (160), Pharmacology and Toxicology (170) Economic and Business (176), Microbiology (183), Chemistry (187) and Arts and Humanities (197). In Spain, the academic institution of higher education is first in Agricultural Sciences; second in Geosciences; third in Physics and Microbiology; and fourth in Economics and Business, as well as in Clinical Medicine. On a Valencian scale, the UV is first in 15 of the 19 subjects analysed by the Best Global Universities ranking.

The indicators used by this classification are bibliometric, of scientific excellence and reputation. Thus, among the first ones it is about total citations, international collaboration, conferences, impact of standardised citations, books or number of publications in the TOP 10% most cited, among others. As scientific indicators of excellence, the number of highly cited articles TOP 1% and the percentage of highly cited articles among the 1% of the most cited are also evaluated. Finally, the global and regional research reputation also appears as indicators of this ranking. The provider of bibliometric data is the Web of Science-Clarivate Analytics.
