Meeting of the steering committee of the HyperChildNET project in Valencia.

The first European week to fight against child hypertension HyperChildNET, led from Spain by the University of Valencia (UV) and the General University Hospital of Valencia, has the participation of 23 countries and is celebrated coinciding with World Children’s Day (November 20). Empar Lurbe, professor of Pediatrics at the UV and head of the Pediatrics service at the General University Hospital of Valencia, coordinates this international project that treats hypertension in childhood and adolescence.

In the first European HyperChildNET week, from November 15 to 21, a wide variety of scientific dissemination and awareness actions are planned. The week has a double objective. On the one hand, to make health professionals aware of the importance of controlling blood pressure in children and adolescents, and, on the other, to disseminate healthy practices for the general population, with special attention to children, adolescents, as well as their families and educators.

Empar Lurbe highlights “the need to launch the first European week that will be held every year coinciding with World Children’s Day, to concentrate a varied range of activities that are organised in parallel in various European countries in order to promote objectives related to the fight against hypertension in adolescents and children”.

This year the central theme corresponds to emphasising the relevance of the measurement of blood pressure in children and adolescents with three fundamental points: why it is important to measure blood pressure, what is the methodology to measure it and how to establish the diagnosis of arterial hypertension.

The participating members have produced various videos, highlighting the most important aspects, and there are also other more widely disseminated videos. All of this translated into 7 languages.

HyperChildNET has among its objectives to disseminate scientific and technical information to provide guidelines to health professionals in accordance with the European guidelines of the European Society of Hypertension (ESH), of which Dr. Empar Lurbe is also a co-author through her work as main researcher of the working group specialised in arterial hypertension in children and adolescents in the ESH.

During HyperChildNET Week, researchers from this international network made up of 23 countries will be focused on professionals in the health field and also on all families and educators to disseminate the objectives of this network and, all of this, with the aim of improving the quality of life of children and adolescents.

The COST Action HyperChildNET: “Network for Blood Pressure Research in Children and Adolescents” is a project funded and maintained by the Association for European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) and by the European Commission through its Horizon 2020 program. This network is focused on blood pressure in children and adolescents. It is a multidisciplinary and sustainable European network of researchers, physicians, health economists, leaders, patients, regulatory bodies, nutrition and pharmaceutical companies, and manufacturers of medical devices. The network already includes participants from 23 countries and the number is increasing steadily.

The objective of HyperChildNET is to obtain a holistic perspective of the factors involved in hypertension in pediatric age and its consequences in order to propose and implement preventive and corrective actions. To continue with this challenge, specific objectives and a plan have been established to guide the activities for the next 4 years.

As the University of Valencia is the Grant holder, the first hybrid meeting was held in the Board Room of the Rectorate of the University of Valencia on October 13 and 14. During the meeting, the Steering Committee decided to develop a strategy to expand its dissemination, moving forward with the event of the “European HyperChildNET Week” from 15 to 21 November.
