Yeray López Arauco, a student at the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Valencia, represents Spain at the UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development, an event held as a virtual conference from 17 to 19 May 2021 and which will analyse current environmental issues in relation to overexploitation of resources, climate change and environmental crisis on a global scale.

The event is proposed with the intention of reaching agreements for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals at the educational and civil level within the 2030 Agenda. During the three days, events have been proposed that will be held through meetings among the representatives of each country. Some will be open access, and in others only the invited people will be able to participate. The Spanish team is made up of representatives of the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training, representatives of the General Directorate of Sustainable Development Policies of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Centre for Environmental Education of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge. In turn, civil society is represented through Futuro en Común and Confint.

The UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development aims to raise awareness of these challenges, highlighting the crucial role of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) as a key factor for the successful achievement of all the SDGs, the COVID rebuilding process and creating a momentum for strengthening ESD in policy and practice.

“From the State Conference for Children and Young people on the Planet held in Alcaraz (Albacete) where I attended as a representative of the Valencian Community, I return with the initiative to comply with the ODS15 Life in terrestrial ecosystems. For this, from my school we are committed to sponsoring a natural park and we started participating in a conservation project of the Kentish plover ‘Charly & Co’ in collaboration with the technicians of the Natural Park of the Lagunas de la Mata and Torrevieja”, highlights Yeray Lopez.

The whole educational community of IES Number 1 Libertas Torrevieja took part in this project. The initiative has allowed López to participate in events as a speaker at the Web Seminar on Education for Sustainable Development, educational strategies for sustainability. Also in 2021 Future Paths, a conference organised by the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training, in the Youth Conference “Let’s take care of the planet”, an online event organised by the government of Cantabria and CEDREAC, among others.

“Participating in these events has allowed me to share experiences and train at a professional level and realise how important it is to care for the environment and the need for sustainable development, making it clear that if t “If you resolve to do it, there are no limits”, says Yeray López. He also points out: “Throughout all these experiences I have been left with something clear that can be summed up in the following sentence: Young people are not the future, we are the present and change is not yet here it’s us”.
