The Best Global Universities ranking is prepared by the U.S. magazine. News & World Report with the aim of responding to the growing demand of American students who wish to enrol in foreign universities. It analyses institutions from more than 80 countries that have been classified based on 13 indicators that measure their academic performance in research and their global and regional reputation. It has an institutional aspect and another one by subjects.

Regarding the institutional one, in the ranking indicators, the University of Valencia stands out in regional research reputation (upgrades to world position 76, instead of the 98th in 2021), a term that analyses the reputation of the best universities of each region under investigation for 5 years. In addition, in total citations, the institution ranks 195th worldwide, as well as in the number of highly cited articles (among the 1% with the most citations), where it is in position 194.

The Best Global Universities is led internationally by Harvard University, by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and by Stanford University. At the Spanish level, the University of Valencia is only surpassed by three Catalan ones: the University of Barcelona, the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the Pompeu Fabra University.

By subjects, 31 subjects have been analysed and the UV has been classified in 27 of them. In addition to Food Science and Technology, the first Valencian academic institution stands out in Spain as the first in Education, Geosciences and Microbiology. It is second in Pharmacology and Toxicology, Physics and in Public, Environmental and Occupational Health; and ranks third in Spain in Ambient/Ecology and in Clinical Medicine. Internationally, the University of Valencia is among the top one hundred universities in the world in Public Health (number 52), Education (79) and Physics (98).

Thus, among the first ones are total citations, international collaboration, conferences, normalised citation impact, books or number of publications in the top 10% most cited, among others. As scientific indicators of excellence, the number of highly cited top 10% articles and the number of publications are also evaluated. The global and regional reputation of research also appears as indicators of this ranking.
