The University of Valencia (UV) has improved its international position 28 places compared to 2020 in the SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR) and is placed at number 196 in the world, while on a European scale it has advanced 14 places and is 83. In the classification –which evaluates the results of the 4,126 main universities–, by subject the institution is second in Spain in three of them: Economics and Econometrics, Business Administration and Management, and Psychology.

This ranking classifies university institutions with more than 100 articles published and included in the Scopus database, and orders these centres by a composite indicator that combines three groups of markers based on research, innovation and social impact measured by the visibility of their Web. SIR is developed by the SCImago LAB research group, which works on scientific visibility and online reputation. As a novelty, in the 2021 edition, the version of the ranking by subjects and indicators has been published for the first time.

Thus, at the institutional level, the University of Valencia is fifth in Spain, the same position as the two previous editions, and first in the Valencian Community, a position it has also held since 2019. This fact, and the improvement on a European and global scale produced in a context in which the number of centres analysed in the ranking has increased by 229.

By subjects, the UV is third in Spain in two: Physics and Astronomy, and Dentistry. It also ranks fifth in five more areas: Arts and Humanities, Agricultural and Biological Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Earth Sciences, and Social Sciences. Adding up all the subjects analysed, 19, the University of Valencia is among the top five in Spain in 10 of them, 52.63%. On the other hand, in 9 of these areas, UV is among the top two hundred in the world. The following stand out: Dentistry (position number 63), Arts and Humanities (103), Psychology (105), Business Studies and Administration (121) and Social Sciences (131).

By indicators, the Valencian academic institution is third in Spain and number 111 in the world in the section on society; sixth in Spain and 143 internationally in research, and occupies positions 219 and 11, respectively, in the innovation section.

This ranking is led internationally by Harvard University and Harvard Medical School; in Europe by Oxford and the University College London; and in Spain by the Universities of Barcelona, Autonomous of Barcelona, Complutense of Madrid, Autonomous of Madrid and the University of Valencia.

The indicators used in the ranking are, among others, innovative knowledge, technological impact, standardised impact, innovative knowledge, technological impact, the number of patents applied for or the number of links to the web domain.
