Professor Elías Díaz will participate, together with the Minister of Justice, Gabriela Bravo, and professor Javier de Lucas, in a debate organised by the UV, on the occasion of the fifty years of the publication of ‘Estado de Derecho y Sociedad Democrática’ (Rule of Law and Democratic Society), a book by professor Díaz that has become a classical of legal literature. The event, that will take place on Monday 12 December at 19 hours in the Principal Peset Hall of Residence, is part of the celebration of the International Day of Human Rights.

The title of the debate is ‘Human Rights: a challenge for the Valencian Community’, and it has been organised, for the second consecutive year, by the Institute of Human Rights of the UV, in the framework of the programme of seminars of master’s degree and doctorate in Human Rights, Democracy and International Justice.

“The history of the Spanish transition to democracy can not be understood without mentioning the book ‘Estado de Derecho y Sociedad Democrática’, a work from which generations and generations of jurists have been created”, says professor Javier de Lucas. Elías Díaz has been full university professor of Philosophy of Law in the Autonomous University of Madrid, where he has retired as professor emeritus. He is honorary doctor by the Carlos III University of Madrid, by the University of Milan, by the University of Granada and by the University of Alicante. He has been director of the Centro de Estudios Políticos y Constitucionales. Graduate in Law by the University of Salamanca with an Extraordinary end of studies Prize, Elías Díaz received his PhD at the University of Bolonia and he soon started his collaboration with Joaquín Ruiz-Giménez and José Luis López Aranguren. In Italy, he worked with professors Norberto Bobbio and Renato Treves. Co-founder of the Cuadernos para el diálogo magazine, he has also been director of the Sistema magazine, related to the PSOE.

Master’s Degree in Human Rights, Democracy and International Justice

The master’s degree (directed by professors Cristina García Pascual and Rosario Serra) and the doctoral programme of Human Rights, Democracy and International Justice of the UV (directed by professor Consuelo Ramón), which are offered for the eighth consecutive year, has received the excellence mention from the Ministry of Education, in which Spain has only obtained eight master’s degree of the legal field. Furthermore, the Institute of Human Rights of the UV obtained a grant in the Consolider-Ingenio 2010 programme for a project in which twelve research groups from different Spanish universities coordinated by the Bartolomé de las Casas Institute of Human Rights of the Carlos III University of Madrid participated. It was the first time that a team formed by researchers from the legal field received this kind of aid, mostly aimed to scientific contexts away from Humanities and Social Sciences.
