The UV, leader of the public universities in the University Spanish Championship

With 55 medals The Universitat de València is the first public university in the medal table of the 2022 University Spanish Championship (CEU). It is also the university with the highest participation of athletes, more than 300 UV athletes have competed in the CEU 2022.

The talent, effort and dedication of the athletes of the Universitat de València has been rewarded in the medal table of the 2022 University Spanish Champoionship (CEU) which ended at the beginning of June. 

The Universitat de València is the public institution that has won the most medals in an edition that, at last, has been able to return to normality in all its glory, with the participation of 74 universities and nearly 5,000 athletes. This is indicated by the data contained in the activities report of the Spanish committee College Sports (CEDU), advisory body of the Supreme council for sports (CSD).

According to the data of the CEDU, the UV is in the first place in the medal table of the public universities, with a total of 55 medals (12 gold, 14 silver, and 29 bronze). In the overall classification of public and private universities, the Universitat de València is in second place, behind the organizing university of the 2022 CEU, The Catholic University of Saint Anthony (UCAM), that is in the first place with 156 medals. In the third position is the Universitat de Barcelona with 31 medals. 

  • 12 gold, 14 silver and 29 bronze medals for the UV

On a competitive level, the athletes of the Universitat de València have done a great job in the inter-university championship this 2022. In the individual sports swimming, athletics, karate, and climbing stood out. And in team competition the UV had a good year, specially in handball and 3X3 basketball.

It is worth highlighting the 5 gold medals won by swimmers Mikel Bonal and Héctor Fontabella, and the performance of Núria Payola who won a silver medal competing alongside Olympic level swimmers such as Mireia Belmonte. The results of the of the University's athletes on the athletics track deserve special mention: María González, Carmen Marco and Yurena Hueso who won 3 gold medals in the triple jump, 100 m, and 800m, respectively. In Karate Hugo Ballester also climbed to the top of the podium, and Iker Ortiz won a gold medal in climbing.

As for the team competitions, the handball team was the champion in the University Spanish Championship in an exiting final against the University of Málaga. And in 3X3 basketball the UV boys won the most precious medal in a heart-stopping final against the hosting university, the UCAM of Murcia. Praiseworthy is also the work of the women's football and volleyball teams, which won the silver medal; and in women's basketball, the UV girls won the bronze medal. 

  • The UV, first in participation in CEU 2022

Regarding athletes participation, the UV was the university that has taken the largest number of athletes to the 2022 University Spanish Championship.

With a total of 305 athletes, the Universitat de València not only leads the overall participation ranking, but also has achieved a great gender parity with 150 female athletes and 155 male athletes in the CEU 2022. As the director of the Sports Service of the Universitat, Ana Mª Gómez, says: “With this numbers the Universitat de València shows its commitment with college sport, which is essential for the education of students and the acquisition of values. It also reaffirms its commitment to egalitarian sport and its will to continue increasing and improving the sports activities and facilities”.
