The UV organises an international congress about the relation between social class and eating in Europe in the late Middle Ages
The Universitat de València organises, on 29 and 30 April, the international congress ‘Eating according to status. Eating and society in Europe in the late Middle Ages.’ This is a part of broad programme of activities that the UV has organised for the exhibition ‘Medieval gastronomy. The book of Sent Soví and cuisine in the 14th and 15th centuries’, that shows for the first time to the public the Sent Soví (1324), the first recipe book known in the Iberian Peninsula and that the Historical Library of the UV keeps.

The majority of lectures will take place in the Palmireno Hall of the Faculty of Geography and History and will also be celebrated in the Aula Magna of La Nau Cultural Centre. Admission is free until full capacity. The congress is organised byAntoni FurióandJuan Vicente García Marsilla,full-time university professors of Medieval Historyof the Universitat de València.The opening of the congress, on Tuesday, 29 April, will be at 9:00am, at the Palmireno Hall and will be led by Ester Alba, vice-principal for Culture and Society of the Universitat de València and Manuel Lomas, dean of the Faculty of Geography and History.
For two days, different European specialists will reflect on the relation between social condition and eating in Europe in the late Middle Ages. The practices and eating habits were already signs of class and markers of inequality back then. Among the lecturers,Massimo Montanari, form the University of Bologna;Bruno Laurioux, from François Rabelais University of Tours, andAntoni Riera i Melis, from the University of Barcelona stand out, among others. Also, on 29 April, the afternoon sessions will be celebrated at La Nau and, at 5:00pm, the catalogue of the exhibition ‘Medieval Gastronomy. The Book of Sent Soví and the cuisine in the 14th and 15th centuries will be presented.
