Deans of the five public Valencian universities (Universitat de València, Universitat Politècnica de València, University of Alacant, Universitat Jaume I and Miguel Hernández University of Elche) have gathered this week in Ontinyent. They have been received by the Major of the city and also President of the Valencia Provincial Council, Jorge Rodríguez, and several academic and municipal authorities.

During the official reception, held at the Major’s office, the five deans have signed in the book of honour of the city. Also, they have unveiled a commemorative plaque that will be located soon at the university campus of Ontinyent.

In the last meeting, the Council of Principals of the Public Valencian Universities, CRUPV, has agreed that it will complaint to ANECA, National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation, about the increment of the corrective measures that alleviate the current disparities in the career of the researcher women. The current evaluation system takes into account the maternity leaves as periods without teaching activity, although they are quoted hours. “This harms and slows down the teaching and research careers of women”, has claimed the current president of the CRUPV, Manuel Palomar, dean of the University of Alacant. Palomar insists that this lack of measures to correct the disparities in terms of genre means that women with children “take longer to achieve the amount of required teaching hours to be accredited, and therefore, aim for permanent place as teachers or full university professors”.

On the other hand, the five deans have decided to join “Declaració Institucional davant la marginació de les valencianes i els valencians en els Pressupostos Generals de l'Estat 2017”, signed by the Regional Parliament of Valencia.  The president of the CRUPV has stated that the decrease of the resources for the Region of Valencia “will involve inevitably a reduction of the recovery and growth capacity in the whole area that affects the educational Valencian public system”.
