Violence in German literature

The UV and the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz organise a meeting between specialists in the study of violence in literature and cultural studies in German language, that will be hold from 24 to 26 October, in the Faculty of Language Studies, Translation and Communication and in the Principal Peset Hall of Residence.

It is the international congress «READingViolence: Ambivalenzen der Gewalt», result of the national and international cooperation between diverse research groups about violence, power, historic memory, and its representation through literary texts and different audio-visual media.

It will focus on a series of research problems that come from a reconceptualisation of the violence phenomenon from the point of view of the literary and artistic speech, specifically studying the different aesthetic resources to express acts of violence. In the corresponding sections of the congress, it will open debate about the transmedia phenomena of violence, the changes on its representation on the digital era, memories of individual and collective violence, violence from a gender perspective or violence as an aesthetic tool for the creation of new artistic speeches.

This international meeting, which will be carried out in German language, has been financed by the DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst / Service for Academic German Exchange) and the Valencian Government. In collaboration with the Department of English and German Studies; the Faculty of Language Studies, Translation and Communication; and the Principal Peset Hall of Residence.
