Healthy Universities Day

The UV has scheduled a whole week full of activities to raise awareness among the university community and the citizenship about the importance of having healthy lifestyles. Valencian public universities celebrate on Thursday 17 November the Healthy Universities Day. Nourishing, physical activity and postural habits, as well as healthy lifestyle, are the main ideas of the proposals for the sessions which start on Friday under the slogan Cuida’t, cuida’l (Take care of yourself, take care of it).

The programme can be consulted here.

The five Valencian public universities (Universitat de València, Universitat Politècnica de València, Universitat d’Alacant, Universitat Jaume I de Castelló, Universitat Miguel Hernández de Elche) are working for many years under the umbrella of Healthy Universities to rise awareness among the university community and the citizenship of the importance of establishing good habits. Along this line, healthy lifestyles with information and prevention on drugs, anorexia, bulimia, cardiovascular risks, or a campaign focused on nutrition, physical activities and postural habits are some of the issues of the activities for this year. During the sessions, guidebooks about healthy breakfast and healthy habits will be distributed.

The activities will develop from 11 to 18 November. The first proposal is carried out on Friday with the preview of the film ‘SustainableEating’, at 16:30 hours, in the Charls Darwin Room of the Faculty of Pharmacy, in the Burjassot-Paterna Campus. All information can be found here.

The official opening event for the Healthy Week in the Valencian Network of Public Universities will take place in the Ontinyent Campus on Monday 14 November. It will be at 10 hours in the plaza de la Coronación o del Mercado. It will be attended by the vice-principal for Academic Planning, Teaching Staff and Sustainability, Mavi Mestre; the Major of Ontinyent, Jorge Rodríguez; the dean of Physical Activity and Sports Sciences, Vicente Añó; and the full university professor of the UV and nutrition expert, Dolors Corella. Then, the Faculty of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences will distribute the healthy guidebook and also fresh fruit and dried fruit and nuts to the university community and those people who visit the campus. Furthermore, attendants will enjoy an evaluation of the body composition and the quality and step speed, as well as a valuation of their physical condition.

The Valencian Network of Public Universities remind that the main role of university regarding teaching, research, innovation and social and cultural projection represents an ideal framework to notably contribute to the promotion of health and the well-being of the population, what represents an unavoidable commitment of the institutions with these values.

The university is not, and can not be, unrelated to the value of health. For this university that fulfils its main task, it is necessary to go into detail about the incorporation of health promotion as an institutional strategy. In this way, the main goal is to enhance university as a surrounding that promotes health in the university community and the society as a whole, through dynamic and active processes to participate and cooperate, and make easier the healthy options.

To achieve a healthy university the network aims to promote the development of habits that ease an independent, active and responsible life committed to improve the life quality of people and society. The activities scheduled for this week look for a direct awareness of the university public.
