The UV's dissemination project La Falla Immaterial celebrates its third edition by using engineering and data science to talk about new advances in quantum computing. This project, called 'Qubit' (quantum bit), has started up a multimedia installation (a large cube) that can be visited at La Nau Cultural Centre, and they invite everyone to live a quantum experience these Falles.

The project has been presented in a press conference which involved Antonio Ariño, vice-principal for Culture and Sport of the Universitat de València; Pere Fuset, the councilor of Festive Culture at Valencia City Council; Marina Civera, the Fallera Mayor of Valencia, Francisco Grimaldo, assistant director of the School of Engineering and Emilio Soria, director of the Master’s Degree in Data Science.

Qubit is an interactive artistic facility inspired in two basic properties of quantum mechanics: superposition and entanglement. In addition, the webpage fallaimmaterial.com allows you to explore a virtual 3D qubit that shows the graphic imaginary of the Fallas through photos shared on social media (people can participate by using the hashtag #fallaimmaterial), which have been taken and processed by computer techniques and artificial intelligence.

Falla Immaterial uses machine learning algorithms of data collection and analysis in social media. The knowledge necessary to develop the project is transferred from the computing, data science and multimedia degrees of the School of Engineering at the Burjassot-Paterna Campus of the Universitat.

Committee

‘La Falla Immaterial’ designs engineering and data science applications for society. This project is driven from the Burjassot-Paterna Campus by the School of Engineering of the Universitat de València (ETSE-UV). The team that leads the development of the Falla Immaterial is formed by: Francisco Grimaldó (director); Emilia López and Emilio Soria (data management and analysis); Daniel García (programming); Alejandro Casasús (design).

The Falla Immaterial is supported by the Junta Central Fallera, Valencia City Council (Festive Culture councillorship), EMT Valencia, La Nau Cultural Centre, Servei de Política Lingüística, the Federació Valenciana de Divulgació Científica and the Scienctific Culture and Innovation Unit of the UV, apart from the sponsorship of entities like: Tenis Distillery, Velarte and the CAPS Group.

Festivities programme

The Falla Immaterial will complement her ‘qubits’ with several cultural activities from contents provided by their profile on social media: @fallaimmaterial.

The project motivates people to learn more about quantum computing by attending two open activities: a Science Bar on computing and quantum mechanics that will take place on March 12th (19:00) at the Octobre Centre de Cultura Contemporània; and a special broadcast in CV Ràdio A Ciencia Cierta. Besides, EMT Valencia will diffuse a project through its buses and an entertainment team on the street during the mascletades to entertain the public, give away gifts and invite people to participate in the project.
