Biographical outline:

Dr. Muhammad Yunus was born in Chittagong, Bangladesh, in 1940. Student of Economic Sciences, he obtained a Fulbright grant that let him to get the doctorate in the Vanderbilt University (USA) in 1970. He worked as professor in the University of Tennessee between 1969 and 1972, year in which he came back to his homeland and he joined as head of the Department of Economics in the University of Chittagong until 1976.

Being sure that the theories he explained to the students did not serve to solve the terrible problems of extreme poverty and hunger, he began in collaboration with some students the approximation to the analysis of concrete cases of people whose productive activities depended on local operators and usurers, and he reached to the conclusion that with 27 USA dollars, that he put into his pocket, he could solve 42 cases subjected to this dependence.

From that moment, he initiated the activities that let to the creation of the Grameen Bank in 1986, whose activity is lending money without any kind of document, paper, guarantee or consignature, exclusively based on the people and their projects' trust. Up to now, the Grameen Bank has given loans with a total amount of 5,400 milions of USA dollars to more than 5.89 milions people, with a recovery rate of more than 98%. Nobel Peace Prize in 2006, professor Yunus has been able to make public and spread Grameen Bank's methodology in more than 80 countries and he has received more than 50 international awards of the highest category, among which there are the Prince of Asturias Awards for Concord in 1998, and 22 titles as honoris causa doctor given by universities of the five continents.
