The University of Valencia, in addition, reaches its best position in the world (number 224) since the SCImago-Institutions Rankings (SIR) was developed, in this edition among 3,471 universities, 11% more than last year. Per areas, as a Higher Education institution, the University improves 38 positions compared to 2018 worldwide and 30 in Europe. It also advances two positions in Spain and ranks fifth best university and goes on to lead the classification of Valencian higher education institutions.

The SIR is developed by the SCImago LAB research group and classifies institutions that are dedicated to scientific research, with the criterion of having more than 100 articles published and indexed in the SCOPUS database. The institutions are grouped by sectors: All, Government, Health, Higher Education and Private Sector. Regarding Spain, this ranking classifies 292 institutions of all sectors, 65 of which are university ones.

Thus, the University of Valencia, in 2019 ranked 224 best in the world and number 96 in Europe. Therefore, it improves regarding the previous edition, where it occupied positions 262 in the world, 126 in Europe, 7 in Spain and 2 in the Valencian Community.

The Vice Rector of Strategy, Quality and Information Technologies of the University of Valencia, Joaquín Aldás, highlighted: “The significant improvements in the rankings that measure the research performance are a direct consequence of the efforts of our researchers, who have shown extreme resilience in a context of restrictions in the funding of RDI, thanks to the fact that their sense of responsibility as scientists has prevailed over adversity. In addition, Aldás remarked that “we can expect that in the next few years our country will assume funding for research according to the quality of its scientists and the place that corresponds to Spain in the global context”.

On an international scale, the SCImago-Institutions Rankings is led by Harvard University, Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In Europe, the universities of Oxford, College London and Cambridge are at the forefront, while in Spain the ranking is led by the University of Barcelona, the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the Complutense University of Madrid.

In the 2019 edition, the data used correspond to the 2013-2017 period. The indicators used are grouped into three blocks: those referred to research and coming from the Scopus databases, to which 50% of the valuation is assigned; Innovation indicators (30%) provided by the EPO Global Patent Database (PATSTAT); and social impact markers (20%) from Google and the Ahrefs web positioning tool. As a novelty, this year indicators of our own and open access journals have been included.
