Pangaea Association Coordination Board

Faculty of Geography and History Young Researchers Association of Universitat de València. “Pangaea”, has agreed to undertake, on the occasion of the Silk Road in Valencia, several conferences to encourage academic discussion, as well as debates and meetings.

Silk Road designation is relatively new. By the middle of the XIX century, german geographer, baron Ferdinand von Richthofen, baptised this commercial network as Die Seidenstrasse. Not only movement of goods and other products were extremely valuable through this huge communication network but also ideologies, beliefs, cultures and wisdom that influenced the history and civilisation in the european and asian villages.

Silk Road represents today this intellectual engagement between villages and an exchange of cultural and social concerns. A bridge that helps connecting plural identities, common heritage, science and art that was disseminated along the villages where the road was spread. Most lasting legacy of the Silk Road has been, undoubtedly, the contact between cultures. This transfer of knowledge, ideas, cultures, beliefs and traditions that were spread in an cultural interaction process will be the conference guiding thread.

Henceforth, we will use the Silk Road as a paradigm to reconsider the significance of this exchange from a historical, territorial, artistic and cultural perspective.
