Land Day demonstration
Jaffa, 28 March 2008

2000 demonstrators gathered in Jaffa today (Friday, March 28) to mark the 32nd annual Land Day. Participants included MK Muhammad Barake, MK Dov Khenin and former MK Tamar Gozansky (leading members of the DFPE-Hadash - Communist Party of Israel) and prominent figures in the Arab population - the Nazareth Mayor Ramez Jeraizi.

Jaffa residents were protesting what they called "being pushed out of the city" by hundreds of eviction and demolition orders issued to families from the city's Ajami neighborhood. The city authorities claims that the homes in question "were constructed illegally, or that their occupants are squatting". Hundreds of Jews, mostly Tel-Aviv residents or members of the Communist Party also took part in the event, at which protesters waved red and Palestinian flags.
