Midlife is a crucial
period in any strategy of health promotion. For women, the accomplishment
of reproductive needs determines that important areas such
as contraception, fertility, or perinatal care have already passed
away. The increasing life expectancy, plus the clear evidence that
there is a specific pattern of longevity and disease in the female,
has promoted a new body of knowledge focused on the specific needs
of women.
The limitations recently imposed
to the use of hormones have only reinforced the importance of the many
issues of relevance for health and quality of life. The new field of
care to the needs of nonsymptomatic women has been open. Many chronic
diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, breast cancer
or cognitive impairment, which are responsible for much of the morbidity
and mortality in the second half of life, evolve sub-clinically for
years. Strategies to prevent or reduce the clinical burden of these
pathologies, with criteria that are personalized for each woman, define
the latest advancements in the medicine for women. This meeting, which
will review the most recent achievements in the field, will be the
presentation of this modern and innovative form of understanding attention
to women in this period of their lives.
