Psicología Política, Nº 30, 2005, 7-26 ETHNIC MINORITY-MAJORITY ASYMMETRY AND ATTITUDES TOWARDS IMMIGRANTS ACROSS 11 NATIONS C.Staerklé - J.Sidanius - E.G.T.
ABSTRACT Using survey data
from 11 countries, we analysed levels of xenophobia and ethnic and national
identification of ethnic majorities and minorities who both share national
citizenship. We predicted that majorities would enjoy higher social status
than minorities and feel more representative of the superordinate
national group than minorities. Hence, compared to minorities, majorities
were expected to show (1) higher levels of national identification, (2) a
more positive relationship between ethnic and national identification, (3)
higher levels of xenophobia against immigrants, and (4) a more positive
relationship between identification and xenophobia. Results were largely
consistent with these predictions. In addition, we also found that only for
majorities ethnic identification mediated the impact of national
identification on xenophobia. Results are discussed in terms of subgroup relations
within superordinate categories and recent models
of intergroup relations. Key

RELATIONS, RACISM AND ATTRIBUTION OF NATURAL AND
CULTURAL TRAITS J. Claude Deschamps, J.
Vala, C.Marinho, R.Costa Lopes, R.Cabecinhas University of Lausanne, University of Lisboa,
framed by the general hypothesis according to which racism and xenophobia are
today expressed not only in direct ways but also in indirect ways, in ways
that protect people from being seen as transgressors of the anti-racist norm.
From this general hypothesis we derived specific hypotheses on ingroup favouritism and outgroup
derogation at the level of the attribution of natural and cultural traits. We
tested the hypothesis that the groups that are object of racialization
(black Africans) or etnhicization (people
classified as “from eastern countries” and as Muslims) can also be object of ontologisation. Our results show an ingroup favouritism and outgroup derogation of devalued outgroups
or of outgroups with inferior social status. Results also show
that an outgroup with a
status equal to the one of the ingroup and with
common imagined roots is not object of discrimination. Moreover, black
Africans are the only group object of ontologisation. Key

Psicología Política, Nº 30, 2005, 41-56 EXCLUSION OF ETHNIC GROUPS FROM THE REALM OF HUMANITY Prejudice
against the Gypsies in Britain and in Romania Afrodita Marcu - Xenia Chryssochoou University of Surrey, Panteion University RESUMEN Se analiza el
ABSTRACT Prejudice against
ethnic minorities is investigated not only as the establishment of difference
between social groups on valued dimensions but also as the denial of similarities
that would prevent the inclusion of both ingroups
and outgroups in the superordinate
category of human-beings. The present study sought to explore the two
concepts that are advanced to describe the phenomenon of dehumanisation of outgroups: their ontologisation
and their infra-humanisation in relation to the Gypsy minority. British and
Romanian participants were asked to rate their national ingroup
and the Gypsies using characteristics judged typically human and typically
animal following the ontologisation and infrahumanisation literature. The results indicated
that the ontologisation of the Gypsies occurs in
both national samples whereas their infra-humanisation is only verified for
the British participants. The implications of these findings are discussed
from the perspectives of the infrahumanisation and ontologisation. Key

ABSTRACT The relation
between cultural assimilation of a minority and prejudice toward the minority
is studied. We develop the hypothesis of a genealogical prejudice: a social
hierarchy anchored in a temporary representation of the group. In a 2 (gypsy
minority sedentary vs. nomadic) x 2 (period of these cultural practices of
the minority: past vs. present) experiment, the results confirm that the past
anchorage of the cultural conversion of the minority (sedentarization
of the gypsies) generates a minor rejection (a minor stereotyped perception,
a few less negative latent attitudes and a minor social distance) compared to
when this cultural change is something recent. In this latter case the
converted gypsy -sedentary- generates major social rejection relative to the
gypsy who maintains his cultural specificity -nomadic. Key

RELEVANCE OF STUDYING PATRIOTISM AND NORMATIVE CONFLICT IN
CHANGING ATTITUDES TOWARDS IMMIGRANTS M.A.
Depuiset – F.Butera Laboratoire
ABSTRACT The aim is to
theoretically investigate the role that patriotism may play in the
persistence of discrimination. Patriotism refers to attachment to one’s own
country, and might lead to discrimination against individuals who are not
part of the country. However democratic countries strongly promote the
non-discrimination norm. Then, patriotism could present individuals with a normative conflict (i.e., conflict
between one’s own norm and the ingroup norm), which has been shown to have a potential
for attitude change. It is argued that the norms promoted by a country
interact with the patriotic orientation of their citizens, producing
differential patterns of attitude change. The case of changing negative
attitudes toward immigrants is discussed. Key

ABSTRACT This article
addresses the issue of otherness as
a social-psychological process of simultaneous construction and exclusion
of an outgroup that has to
be related to the prevailing frame of reference (political, racial,
cultural...) adopted by the members of the ingroup.
We illustrate the notion that in the European immigration countries, a logic of xenophobia
(concerned with the rights of foreigners) and a logic of a new racism (concerned with the
cultural values of the Other)
appear to be closely intertwined. The coexistence of diverse frames of
reference allows the simultaneous use of different modes of exclusion, that will be conceptualized as different forms
of denial of recognition. Key
