Psicología Política, Nº 31, 2005, 7-22 WHEN WILL THEY EVER LEARN? AN EXAMINATION OF FIDEL CASTRO AND KIM
norcoreanos básicamente no habían cambiado.
ABSTRACT After the demise of the Soviet Union only a handful of communist
states remained in the international system. Two such states, Cuba and North Korea,
continued on the status quo path with only minor changes in their foreign
policy. Scholars have argued that Cuban and North Korean foreign policies in
the immediate post-cold war period did not undergo any sizeable changes
because the belief systems of Cuban and North Korean leaders did not undergo
substantive change. Our study asks a decade later whether the Cuban and North
Korean leaders have changed their beliefs in the domain of foreign policy
behavior, and if so, in what direction and to what degree. Specifically, we
ask whether Fidel Castro adjusted his beliefs since the time period
immediately following the end of the cold war and whether the beliefs of Kim Jong Il and his surrounding ruling elite continue or
break with the beliefs of his predecessor and father Kim Il Sung. The study
also addresses the frustration-aggression hypothesis regarding aggressive
foreign policy dispositions reflected in the belief systems of the North
Korean and Cuban leadership. Key

variables sociodemograficas (hombres, edad
ABSTRACT Through
a secondary analysis of the data collected by the Italian North-West
Observatory on a representative sample of the Italian adult population, we
analysed the changes undergone in 2003 -2004 in the opinions and in the
attitudes towards the war, and specifically towards the Iraqi conflict. In
that period the Italians became less favourable to the presence of the
Italian troops in Iraq. Moreover, they became less trustful in the official
reasons the Anglo-American alliance alleged to justify the war. Finally, the
percentage of the Italians believing that the war was made for oil and for extending
US control in the Middle-East area increased. Nevertheless, in the period
considered, the number of the Italians believing that wars are
acceptable boosted. The chief predictors of the probability of believing
that wars are acceptable are some socio-demographic variables (sex, age, and
education), and some psychological, psychosocial and political variables
(RWA, SDO, locus of control, religiousness, political
orientation, and values. Key

POLITICAL IDENTITY. An
ABSTRACT Inquiries into
political identity and political identification partially search for answers
to the questions, Who am I? The
answers are usually treated as elements in a political perspective, the other major components being demands and expectations. It is argued that identification is not something
which we voluntarily create and
that it has deeper roots in the way we have been brought up and are motivated
to behave politically. In attempts to delineate political identity in
general, and European political identity in particular, territory, language,
ideas, culture, and history may all serve as objects around which we can analyse political identification. In the French debate about European
integration, the opposition between objects
of identity is basically seen as a conflict between modernism and voluntarism,
not in conflicts between social classes or party alignments. This gives a
specific dimension to discussions of political identity which is usually not
so common in other countries. Key words: European integration, political

Psicología Política, Nº 31, 2005, 51-76 GREEK PERCEPTIONS OF THE “EUROPEAN 9/11”. Costs in lives vs. costs to democracy Papastamou, S.- Prodromitis,G.- Iatridis,T. Panteion University, Athens.
diferenciado. ABSTRACT We argue that the
11 March 2004 bombing attacks in Madrid were an event that encapsulates
several components in the relations of authority and influence that are
instrumental for the reception and ideological treatment of phenomena of
terrorist violence. First, we present an experiment that was carried out in
Greece straight after the attack, where a) the victim of the attack (human
lives or democracy itself), b) the nature of the Aznar
Government’s involvement with the war in Iraq and c) the “rationale” of the
terrorist organization responsible for the attack were manipulated. Dependent
variables included subjects' perceptions of terrorists, human rights and
interpretations of terrorist activity. Second, we report on the results of a
survey wherein political affinity and left
or right identity of the event’s
interpretations were further examined. The results partially confirmed classical
conceptions of Left-wing-Right-wing
differences in terms of their ideological anchoring, yet they expand these
conceptions by suggesting a more diverse pattern when interpretations of
terrorism are examined. Key

Psicología Política, Nº 31, 2005, 77-102 CORRUPTION, LEADERSHIP AND DEVELOPMENT IN LATIN AMERICA Ted Goertzel Rutgers
A veces conduce a
transparente ABSTRACT Latin American
corruption is rooted in historical tradition, but also in psychological,
economic and political problems that are found all over the world. Corruption
sometimes leads to short periods of rapid economic growth, but only because
the state has failed to provide the conditions for sustained growth.
Corruption contributes to long term economic sluggishness, which is then
rationalized with ideological scapegoats. The socialist and nationalist
ideologies which predominated among Latin American leftists and intellectuals
have lost their force, but many politicians find this difficult to
acknowledge this publicly. This has led to the emergence of a new type of
leader, the chameleon, who reveals his true colors only after an election. In
the long term, international competition in the global economy will reward
those nations that develop modern transparent economies. Key words:
