Psicología Política, Nº 32, 2006, 7-14 MEMORY, NARRATIVES AND IDENTITY. HOW PEOPLE RECALL, TRANSMIT AND LIVE
THROUGH HISTORICAL EVENTS José
estructuras identitarias y reacciones emocionales
pertenece. ABSTRACT In this article, we will
review a series of studies concerning the impact of sociopolitical
events, identity structures and emotional reactions on the creation,
transmission, and maintenance of collective memories. These studies reflect
on how historical events are remembered, how these memories are mediated by
age cohorts and gender. Moreover, processes of globalization have produced a
strong cross-cultural consensus in the recall of these events, although the
content of what is recalled may be different in diverse groups. Identities
and the need to maintain a positive social identity are also crucial in the
recall of events. This derives in the existence of different possible memories
in victims, members of a victim’s family or friends, and perpetrators of
traumatic events. We will see how these memories have a series of
consequences in a person or group’s values, beliefs and general view of the
World. Key

Psicología Política, Nº 32, 2006, 15-32 THE SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY OF HISTORY. Defining the
most important events of the last 10, 100, and 1000 years J. W. Pennebaker, D. Páez, J.C. Deschamps Univerities
ABSTRACT Over 1300
students from 7 universities in Europe, the United States, and Japan were
asked to list the three most important historical events for the last 10,
100, and 1000 years in the first study. In the second study over 800 students
from two American and three European nations listed the seven most important
historical events of world history and were asked to evaluate them. This
paper reports the analyses of their responses for each time period and across
countries. Although there are some striking similarities, suggesting the
existence of shared social representations of past, focused on wars, politics
and Eurocentric events, it is clear that history is strongly influenced by
culture, moderately by the sex of the respondent, and to some degree by the
age of the respondent. Key

33-58 IDEOLOGÍA POLÍTICA, VALORES CULTURALES Y MIEDO A LA
MUERTE.
ideología política (izquierda y derecha) y los valores de Schwartz;
las creencias de Janoff-Bulman;
situaciones amenazantes (i.e. exogrupo árabe) y a
ABSTRACT In the context of
the March Eleventh bombing, we examined associations among political option
of participants and Schwartz’s Values; Janoff-Bulman’s
Beliefs; Identification with and evaluation of Spaniards and Arabs; Coping
Strategies and Avoidance Behaviours related with
collective violence situations; and Mortality salience. Our results suggest
that right-wing ideology shows two
dimensions, the first one is influenced by values of Security, Conformity and
Tradition and is defined in terms of the right wing authoritarianism and it
is positive associated to fear to death, altruistic coping ), avoiding
threatening situations (i.e. outgroup Arabs), and
with the denial of what have occurred. The second one is related to the value
of Power and it is conceptually associated with the Social Dominance
Orientation theory. Meanwhile people with left-wing ideology, influenced by a
prevalence of the Benevolence value, tend to express themselves through
manifestations or political rituals as mainstreams coping. Key words: political

Psicología Política, Nº 32, 2006, 59-78 DEALING WITH COLLECTIVE SHAME AND GUILT D. Páez, J. Marques, J. Valencia, O. Vincze Universidades
ABSTRACT We discuss the
functions of informal communication in protecting social identity and dealing
with collective guilt and shame, the association between referent information
influence and rumour credibility, and the ecological validity of the triadic
transmission as opposed to the person-to-person transmission in relation to
social process of memory. Serial reproduction is conceived of as a paradigm
to study social representations of past or collective memory. Previous data
and theories are also discussed in relation to Truth and Reparation
Commissions that deal with collective human right violations. Key

Psicología Política, Nº 32, 2006, 79-105 EFFECTS OF
GROUP MEMBERSHIP ON THE TRANSMISSION OF NEGATIVE
HISTORICAL EVENTS J. Marques, D. Páez, J. Valencia, O. Vincze Universities of Porto, Basque Country and Pecz RESUMEN Los estudios muestran que la
mismo endogrupo. ABSTRACT Previous studies
show that the source of a historical rumour
as well as whether it involves in-group or out-group events are powerful determinant
of the way individuals deal with the transmitted information. The present
studies, knitting together perspectives on collective emotions such as
guilt, rumour findings in transmission variables and the reconstruction of
information and social identity defence mechanisms, attempted to analyse how
group members deal with an in-group (as compared to an out-group) derogating
event. The transmission of historical events in the context of inter-group
relations were analysed in three studies. Key

Psicología Política, Nº 32, 2006, 107-130 VIOLENCIA SOCIOPOLÍTICA Y
CUESTIONAMIENTO DE CREENCIAS BÁSICAS SOCIALES M.L. Cabrera, C. Martín Beristain, A. Jiménez y D. Páez Fundación Soros
ABSTRACT This paper describes effects
of collective violence. The collective violence of political origin has
effects in the basic beliefs on the world, the society and the self. From
the Guatemalan experience these effects are exposed. The characteristics
of the violence during the years 70-90 in Guatemala are described, and then
is revised the studies on the dimensions of basic beliefs and the negative
impact of the traumatic facts. Finally, one quantitative study and other
qualitative study on the effect of the violence in Guatemalan Mayan are
presented. Key

Psicología Política, Nº 32, 2006, 131-153 COLLECTIVE SHAME AND THE POSITIONING OF GERMAN NATIONAL IDENTITY E.Dresler-Hawke - J. H.Liu University Massey, Victoria
ABSTRACT A major identity
issue for young Germans is how to deal with the notion of collective guilt or collective shame for the crimes of the
Third Reich. Survey data from both the former East and West Germany reveal a
complex pattern of acceptance and denial of this historical past. A
theoretical model of collective shame was proposed to examine the third
generation’s relationship to the Nazi past. The experience of shame was
dependent on audience effects and interpreted as a form of identity
positioning. Shame was negatively correlated to various indicators of
national identity and collective self-esteem, and positively related to
desire to make reparations for the past. Overall, structural equation
analyses suggested that collective self-esteem (or social identity) rather
than collective shame was the driving force behind the entire pattern of
relationships among variables. Results are interpreted within social identity
theory, to provide a framework for the understanding of the historical
positioning of national identity, collective self-esteem and collective
shame. Key
