Psicología Política, Nº 39, 2009, 7-18 SOCIOPOLITICAL CONTROL AND SENSE OF COMMUNITY.
no militantes. ABSTRACT The aim of the
present work is to analyze individual dimensions (the perception of control)
and contextual and relational dimensions (sense of community), in the field
of political participation. The active involvement in social action
is considered the basis for developing a psychological sense of community and
the perception of control. This study was conducted on a sample of 225
subjects: 125 were not involved in any political activity, whereas 100 were
members of a political party. Among these last, two different degrees of activism were taken into consideration: a)
subjects participating to political parties’ activities with no official
responsibility (militants), and b) subjects with a leading role in the party
and in the institutions (constituency counselors). Globally, political activists showed
higher scores on Sociopolitical Control than non activists. On the
contrary, only one dimension of Sense of Community differentiated
constituency counselors from non activists. Key
words: sociopolitical control, sense of community,
political participation. |
Psicología
Política, Nº 39, 2009, 19-38 OBAMA ES EL MENSAJE. UNA
INTERPRETACIÓN MACLUHANIANA DEL NUEVO LIDERAZGO
PRESIDENCIAL ESTADOUNIDENSE M. Ortega Ruiz y F, J. Luque Castillo
ABSTRACT In this article we argue
that Obama´s victory, in the past presidential
elections, had much to do with the charismatic effect that his biography
exerted over the voters. Thus, as we will show through the analysis of the
speeches he made during the electoral campaign, the personal story of the
Democratic candidate mingled with his political message thanks to the
technique of storytelling. However,
the success of such strategy did not only lie in the fact that Obama´s biography was presented to the citizens as an
extraordinary story, either in the circumstance that the senator´s
physiognomy evoked the content of his message, becoming then a living symbol
in an age of visual culture Assuming biography as the explanatory variable
of the leadership process constitutes an original approach, since leadership
is usually tackled by the social scientists from the perspective of personal
qualities, context or behaviour. Key words: leader, message, biography,
symbol. |
Psicología Política, Nº 39, 2009, 39-54 ROGUE STATES: ENEMIES OF OUR OWN MAKING?
ABSTRACT This article critically
evaluates U.S. foreign policy toward alleged rogue states. I use an
important, but in political science not much discussed, psychological concept
-the self-fulfilling prophecy- to argue that many of our conflicts with rogue
states are of our own making. Even before some alleged rogue countries
engaged in substantive interaction with the U.S., Washington established an
enemy image of them and acted accordingly. By treating these countries as
enemies, the U.S. induced a hostile intersubjective
understanding between itself and those countries and this understanding was
henceforth translated into reality. I suggest altercasting as a strategy to unmake rogue states and I conclude
with critical remarks about contemporary U.S. foreign policy. Key words: self-fulfilling prophecy, rogue states,
conflicts, altercasting. |
Psicología Política, Nº 39, 2009, 55-74 SHARED REALITY AND THE RELATIONAL
UNDERPINNINGS OF SYSTEM-JUSTIFYING BELIEFS John
T. Jost, A. Ledgerwood,
Curtis D. Hardin New York University, University of
cambio revolucionario. ABSTRACT It is tempting to
believe that one’s political convictions reflect independent and unbiased
thinking, but social psychological research increasingly suggests that
ideologies reflect motivational processes. The present paper integrates
system justification and shared reality theories to suggest that ideologies
function as pre-packaged units of interpretation that spread because of basic
human motives to understand the world, avoid existential threat, and maintain
valued interpersonal relationships. We review evidence revealing that affiliative motives influence ideological beliefs to
align with the progressive or conservative views shared within a given
relationship or group, and propose that such motives may lead disproportionately
to the adoption of system-justifying worldviews. Implications for the
context-dependence of ideological convictions, the role that shared reality
may play in group conflicts, and the relational bases of revolutionary change
are discussed. Key
words: ideology, beliefs, human motives, system-justifying worldviews. |
Psicología Política, Nº 39, 2009, 75-87 PRESERVING LIFE SATISFACTION DURING
THE ECONOMIC CRISIS. WHICH FACTORS CAN HELP? C. Rollero y S. Tartaglia University of
ABSTRACT Given the
worldwide economic crisis over the last two years, the fields of well-being and
life satisfaction have taken off as significant focal points of research
attention in the psychological sciences. The present study aimed to
investigate which factors contribute to preserve life satisfaction during
this period of financial adversities. Three different aspects were considered
as possible predictors of life satisfaction: socio-demographical characteristics
(i.e. gender, age, educational level, and having a family); psychological
variables (i.e. need for cognitive closure, and optimism); and the kind of
employment (connected to the income expectations). In order to verify the
influence of these aspects, 182 adults were involved in an empirical study
conducted in Turin, Italy. Results showed the key role played by the
psychological variables, by the family and by positive economic expectations.
Implications are discussed. Key words: worldwide economic crisis,
life satisfaction, cognitive closure, optimism. |
