The certificate of the Italian Language (CELI) is a title that accredits the degree of linguist competence and control of Italian given by the University for Foreigners of Perugia, the most prestigious institution in the field of teaching Italian as a foreign language.
General information
The CELI certificate is officially recognized by the Italian Ministry of Education and also internationally recognized by private companies, chambers of commerce and private and public educational institutions.
The CELI certificate is a valid accreditation of knowledge of the Italian language for academic and professional purpose in Spain and the World for which the correspond level of knowledge is required.
The Italian Ministry of Education recognizes the CELI 3 as a valid certificate to enter any Italian university, according to the places reserved by the university for foreign students. The CELI 4 and CELI 5 certificates enable students to enter any Italian university just as any Italian student.
Within the University of Valencia the CELI certificates are necessary for the following purpose:
- Exchange students (Erasmus) are exempt from the linguist exam if they already have the CELI 2
- Accreditation of the linguist level (B1) for those who want to enrol for an official Master, if they have the CELI 2
The validity of the CELI certificate is indefinite. It is not necessary to repeat the exam in order to reconfirm the competence acquired in Italian.
Addresses
The CELI is for candidates whose mother tongue is not Italian. However, students with Italian as a mother tongue can also take the exam if a certificate of their knowledge of Italian is needed to work abroad.
There is no age limit to take the CELI exam. However, it is recommended for candidates younger than 12 years not to enrol for a level superior to the CELI 2 exam.
Levels
In the University of Valencia the exam can be taken in the following levels, whose equivalence to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is indicated as follows:
CELI Impatto (level A1)
CELI 1 (level A2)
CELI 2 (level B1)
CELI 3 (level B2)
CELI 4 (level C1)
CELI 5 (level C2)
It is not allowed to enrol in more than one level at the same examination date.
Information about the exam
For all the levels, the exams consist of 4 parts (reading comprehension, writing expression, listening comprehension and oral expression). For CELI 3, CELI 4 and CELI 5 certificate there is also a part of linguistic competence. For those candidates who pass the written part or the oral one the mark will be kept for a year. That way the candidate does not have to repeat this particular part within the year.
More information about the exam
The exam leading to a certificate is independent of former exams so the candidates can choose freely the level and the certification that they consider adequate for their preparation and aims.
You may consult models of old exams. The editorial Guerra, of Perugia, has different volumes for the preparation of the CELI exams (Come prepararsi all’esame CELI 1, 2, 3, 4, 5).
