About me

This is me, the one with glasses, not any of the ones with orange eyes :)

A brief story

My name is Jorge Ciros-Pérez, I was born in Mexico City, in April 1970. I studied Biology in the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Campus Iztacala (1989 - 1992). Afterwards (1993 - 1994), I studied in the University of Gent, Belgium, at the laboratory of Animal Ecology under the advise of Prof. Henri J. Dumont and his group, where I began my training in the taxonomic analysis of the freshwater zooplankton (Rotifera, Copepoda and cladocerans). Nowadays, I have a research grant from the Mexican government (Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología -CONACyT-, México) for my Ph.D. studies in the University of Valencia, Spain. I'm enroled at the Research Unit of Evolutionary Ecology, in the Cavanilles Institute of Biodiversity and Evolutionary Ecology (Department of Microbiology and Ecology), under the advise of Profs. Manuel Serra and María José Carmona.

Research interests

I have worked in the taxonomic and biogeographical analysis of littoral cladocerans (mainly Chydoridae and Macrothricidae) from the central region of Mexico, with special interest in the genus Macrothrix, and the subfamily Aloninae.

My current Ph.D. thesis project focuses on the interaction among species as major mechanisms controlling the structure and diversity of natural aquatic communities. The exploitative competition for common resources between three sympatric sibling rotifers species belonging to the Brachionus plicatilis complex is analysed. The three species inhabit into a single pond located in a brackish-water area at the Mediterranean coast of Spain. Moreover, the predator-prey interactions between these species and a cyclopoid copepod (Diacyclops) are studied, focusing on their role as factors promoting rotifer species coexistence or substitution.
