As a country under the colonising yoke of the United Kingdom, the island of Ireland has suffered many different types of violence over the centuries. The decolonisation of part of it after the 1922 War of Independence and Partition led, first, to civil war and, from 1969 onwards, to The Troubles in the north. In the recent centenary celebrations and commemorations, events that had been consciously or unconsciously relegated from popular memory have been re-examined. In November 2020, the Abbey Theatre celebrated the centenary of the first Bloody Sunday in Dublin, rescuing its victims from oblivion in 14 Voices from the Bloodied Field; in Derry, the 50th anniversary of the second Bloody Sunday was widely commemorated in 2022, with exhibitions, documentary theatre made with the victims’ families, and even an opera, The White Handkerchief, staged at Derry Playhouse.

The trauma of Brexit has refocused attention on the border, also celebrating its centenary recently, and brought the identity debate in Northern Ireland back to the forefront of political discourse. The ongoing conflict over the “soft” or “hard” border, the maritime “border in the Irish Sea” between Britain and Ireland, and the outbreak of violence in 2021 showed the difficulties inherent in maintaining the peace process and evidenced the endurance of sectarian violence as demonstrated by the activity of paramilitary groups in peacetime. Successive works of culture have engaged with these questions relating to the legacy of violence with the success of novels such as Milkman, or the TV series Derry Girls, which premiered in 2018 on Channel 4, offering a settling of accounts with the past, and once again highlighting the difficulties of healing the wounds of the conflict.

However, it would be an inexcusable reductionism to focus solely on armed conflicts when talking about violence, and its personal, social, and political consequences. The presence of violence permeates all aspects of our socialisation: the violence of imposing a language on a population brought about by colonisation; the violence of inequality, which the crisis and collapse of the Celtic Tiger and now the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic and the invasion of Ukraine have only aggravated; violence against women, exercised as a strategy of domination through their bodies; violence within the Catholic Church, with the exposure of pederasty cases and the Magdalene Laundries; violence against minority groups, aporophobia (to use Adela Cortina’s term), ableism, and ecocide or violence against the planet, which has mobilised the youth in movements such as Fridays For Future, are just a few examples.

The 21st International Conference of the Spanish Society of Irish Studies (AEDEI), “Violence: Repercussion, Resistance and Representation in Irish Society and Culture”, to be held in València on 31 May, 1-2 June 2023, aims to present, contrast, analyse and debate the different expressions of violence, its repercussions, forms of resistance and, especially, the representation of all of them in Irish societal and cultural expressions, extrapolating them in turn to the reality of the European Space. We welcome proposals for 20-minute papers on topics related to the themes outlined above, and on topics including, but not limited to:

Abstracts of no more than 250 words should be sent to aedei2023@gmail.com by February 15, 2023 (extended deadline). Proposals for panels, roundtables and workshops are also welcome.

PLENARY SPEAKERS

Eamon Maher

Eamon MaherEamon Maher is Director of the National Centre for Franco-Irish Studies in TU Dublin. He is General Editor of two book series with Peter Lang Oxford, Studies in Franco-Irish Relations and Reimagining Ireland, the latter series having over 120 books in print. Recent publications include (with Brian Lucey and Eugene O’Brien), Reimagining the Celtic Tiger (2019), (with Eugene O’Brien), Reimagining Irish Studies for the Twenty-First Century (2021), and (with Sarah Balen), Sounding the Margins: Literary Examples from France and Ireland (2022). He has written two monographs and one edited collection on the Irish writer John McGahern (1934-2006), on whom he is considered to be a renowned expert. His primary research interests are representations of Catholicism in French and Irish fiction, comparative literature, and Franco-Irish links. He is currently working on two monographs, one dealing with the French priest-writer Jean Sulivan (1913-1980) and the other on the Catholic Novel in the twentieth century.

Lisa Fitzpatrick

Lisa Fitzpatrick is Senior Lecturer in Drama at Ulster University in Derry, where she teaches critical theory and Irish theatre, and supervises research in staging violence and post-conflict theatre. She is the author of Rape on the Contemporary Stage (2018), and her recent edited books include The Theatre of Deirdre Kinahan (with Maria Kurdi; Lang, 2022) and Plays by Women in Ireland 1926-1933: Feminist Theatres of Freedom and Resistance (with Shonagh Hill; Methuen, 2022). Her current work on gender-based violence in conflict and post-conflict societies includes a collaboration with Kabosh Theatre Company, Belfast. She is co-convenor of the Feminist Working Group at the International Federation for Theatre Research, and associate editor of Theatre Research International.

Rosemary Jenkinson

Rosemary Jenkinson

Rosemary Jenkinson is a playwright and short story writer from Belfast. She was artist-in-residence at the Lyric Theatre in 2017, writer-in-residence at the Leuven College of Irish Studies in 2019 and is an Arts Council of Northern Ireland Major Artist. She has had six short story collections published, the latest of which is Love in the Time of Chaos (Arlen House 2023). Her plays have been performed in London, Dublin, Belfast, Edinburgh, Brussels, Washington DC and New York. She fervently believes that life is too short for long literature.


Marina Carr

Marina CarrMarina Carr’s plays to date are Ullaloo, 1989; Low in the Dark, 1991; The Mai, 1994; Portia Coughlan, 1996; By the Bog of Cats, 1998; On Raftery’s Hill, 1999; Ariel, 2000; Woman and Scarecrow, 2004; The Cordelia Dream, 2006; Marble, 2007; 16 Possible Glimpses, 2009; Hecuba, 2015, The Boy at the Abbey Theatre 2021, iGirl at the Abbey Theatre 2021; Girl on an Altar at The Kiln Theatre 2022. Adaptations are Anna Karenina (adapted from Tolstoy’s novel), 2016; Blood Wedding (a new version of Lorca’s play), 2019; and To the Lighthouse, an adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s novel. Plays for children are Meat and Salt, 2003 and The Giant Blue Hand, 2007. Her work has been produced by The Abbey Theatre, The Gate, Druid, Landmark, The Royal Court, Wyndhams Theatre, The RSC, The Tricycle, The MacCarter Theatre, San Diego Rep, Milwaukee rep.

She also wrote a new, contemporary translation of Rigoletto for Opera Theatre Company, which toured Ireland in 2015, and wrote an original oratorio Mary Gordon as part of a commission for Wicklow County Council that brought together choirs from throughout County Wicklow with solo singers and the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra in November 2016.

Prizes include WINDHAM-CAMPBELL PRIZE 2017 for her body of work, THE SUSAN SMITH BLACKBURN PRIZE, THE AMERICAN/IRELAND FUND AWARD, THE E.M FORSTER AWARD from the AMERICAN ACADEMY OF ARTS AND LETTERS, THE MACAULAY FELLOWSHIP, THE PUTERBAUGH FELLOWSHIP. She is a member of AOSDANA.

She has taught at Trinity College Dublin, at Villanova University, and at Princeton University. Currently she lectures in the English department at Dublin City University.

She is published by The Gallery Press, Nick Hern Books and Faber & Faber.
