Darwin's

Day

While preparing the great international celebration that will take place on 12th February 2009, Darwin's day is being commemorated worldwide with a variety of activities aiming to spread scientific knowledge among the citizens. The University of Valencia (UVEG) has a centennial tradition of this commemoration. In 1909, a group of Medicine students decided to honour the centenary of Charles Robert Darwin's birthday with a public ceremony and a special issue of the magazine Tribuna Médica dedicated to the author of The Origin of Species.

It's 22nd February 1909, and a large picture of Darwin's dominates the University main hall, which is crowded with students longing to hear the words of Peregrin Casanova (Anatomy professor), Miguel de Unamuno (Chancellor of the University of Salamanca), and professors Juan Bartual and Eduard Boscà.
