TITLE: Socio-economic impacts of climate change: assessment methodologies and risk management

The general objective is the development and application of methodologies in order to evaluate the potential impact of the climatic change over several particularly relevant socio-economic factors, with the aim of establishing the sensitivity of such variables against unexpected climatic conditions. Additionally, various financial instruments that might be useful to manage the risks associated to the climatic change will be studied. The specific objectives are:

  • Analysis of the impact of the climatic change over socio-economic variables.
  • Structure and modelling of the demand for energy.
  • Energy derivatives.
  • Weather derivatives.

  • In order to reach the planned objectives, first the analysis of the impact of the climatic change in the energy sector will be pursued, as the research group has been working very successfully in this field for several years. Later, the analysis will be extended to socio-economic variables related to economic growth and to relevant demographic aspects. Additionally, the consequences of the climatic change over human activity planning will be taken into account.

The projected aim suits perfectly into the priority objective “Atmosphere and Climate” inside the National Programme of “Natural Resources”.
