The institutional commitment that the UV expressed with Palestine –the first university of the State in calling for an end to the war in Gaza– is brought to life through music. The singer-songwriter, Marwán –born in Palestine–, has been the headliner of the Serenates festival, organised collectively with the UV and the IVC. The concert –which took place last 26 June at La Nau Senate– became also a recognition for the rights of the Palestinian people.
The album that names the tour “Canciones para una urgencia”, what makes Marwán celebrate his two decades of making music, refers to that reality and, during his concert, he performed "Nana para una urgencia", an ode composed in the last month of October in which the singer-songwriter condemns the “constant violation of rights that the population in Palestine is suffering”. During the concert, “the son of the Palestinian refugee” reminded that the author rights of this song are meant for the humanitarian response of UNRWA in Gaza and there are different ways of helping: “Buying a new song costs one euro”.
Nana para una urgencia “is a lullaby for Palestine. A soft song to a territory that was never asleep, but that, in the last months, the sound of bombs wanted to silence it”, indicated the singer that composes poems, and writes songs, since Marwán goes with both registers.
In Serenates, Marwán reminded that his father, a refugee at the Palestinian camps, came to study in Spain thanks to a grant of the UNRWA, the Agency of the United Nations for the Palestinian refugees, and, during the concert, he condemned “the genocide” that the population is suffering.
Born in Madrid 1979, Marwán has been named “Music for Peace” in the European Parliament and has given support –along with other music and culture figures– to the university movement against the war in the Middle East. Moreover, through his career path, he has done more than a hundred charity concerts for this cause.
At the beginning of June, during the presentation of the Serenates festival –co-produced by the UV and the IVC– Maria Vicente Mestre –present in the concert of Marwán, along with other figures such as Sergio Arlandis, general director of Culture (GVA)–, manifested the commitment of the institution also through music and culture. “In times of war, both in the heart of Europe and in the Middle East, this year our festival has the presence of a committed voice: Marwán”. The academic institution expressed this commitment since last October. .
