The University of Valencia (UV) is hosting a training workshop for the detection of the drug γ-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) or liquid ecstasy on February Tuesday 22 at 10.30 am at the Faculty of Chemistry. The preventive kit developed by the MODeLiC (Organic Materials for Detection and Controlled Release) research team within the framework of the NOSUM project (Design and evaluation of a personal kit to prevent sexual assault by chemical submission) will be distributed among the attendees.
The activity lasts an hour and a half, and is especially aimed at young people, as it teaches how to avoid chemical submission through liquid ecstasy (use of drugs to override another person’s will). To enrol, you must answer this short survey.
The workshop resumes the research undertaken by the MODeLiC group of the Interuniversity Institute for Molecular Recognition and Technological Development (IDM) on the design of the kit to detect, with the naked eye, the chemical submission drug GHB in beverages. The ScienceFlows group from the University of Valencia also participates in the NOSUM project.
GHB is a colourless, odourless, slightly salty compound that, when ingested, nullifies the consumer’s will. According to the Spanish Society of Emergency Medicine (SEMES), approximately 20% of sexual assaults involve these substances. In this way, the workshop aims to provide tools to prevent attendees from possible future threats.
