Specialists analyse in La Nau a project that allows access to more than 800 European medieval manuscripts

The Centre Cultural La Nau of the University of Valencia hosts since 18 January a series of conferences to present the first results of the European project Europeana Regia. This is a very important project which has allowed for the digitization of 874 medieval and Renaissance manuscripts of great material and historic value from five major European libraries, which can be now consulted via Internet.

The initiative has the support of the European Commission: Bibliothèque Nationale de France (Paris), which acts as a coordinator; Bayerische Staatsbibliothek (Munich); Herzog August Bibliothek (Wolfenbüttel), Bibliothèque Royale de Belgique (Brussels) and Libraries and Documentation Service of the University of Valencia.

The project was developed from January to June 2010. Victoria García Esteve, head of the Libraries and Documentation Service of the University of Valencia, explains that Europeana Regia unites two apparently conflicting objectives: "It offers open access to invaluable material to the public, not only to research staff. It also allows for the consultation, conversation and archiving in the best quality.”
