Workshop

The 9th International Subfossil Cladocera Workshop will be an informal meeting of people who works on subfossil remains of Cladocera in lake and wetland sediments and will follow the tradition of this workshops. The workshop will maintain the original informality (family feeling) and taxonomical and methodological orientation.

The main goal will be to discuss methodology and taxonomical questions, but also short presentations by participants about their work will be programmed. Attention will be played also to teach young scientist in the field of Cladocera subfossil and paleolimnology.

The father of the idea was Atte Korhola, who organized the first two workshops in Helsinki (1999 and 2000). Since then, the workshops have been held every year. The last was organized by Zuzana Horická in Prague (Czech Republic) last September 2006.

Chairs

The workshop will be chaired by Krystyna Szeroczynska (Institute of Geological Science, Polish Academy of Scienes, Warsaw, Poland), Kaarina Sarmaja-Korjonen (Department of Geology, University of Helsinki, Finland) & Maria Rosa Miracle (Department of Microbiology and Ecology, University of Valencia, Spain).

How to get...

By airplane.
Valencia is well communicated. Airport of Valencia has scheduled direct flies from and to Germany, Belgium, France, Netherlands, Ireland, Italy, Morocco, Norway, Portugal, United Kingdom, Romania and Switzerland. And with a stop in Barcelona or Madrid, you can fly from all the world.
Also it is possible to arrive to Barcelona by flight and reach Valencia by Euromed train (prize 40 euros, 3 hours trip). It is very easy and fast to go from Barcelona airport to Barcelona - Sants railway station by the airport train (each 30 minutes, prize 4 euros).

From the airport of Valencia to the workshop site, from 06:00 to 23:00 hours, the best is the Metro (subway train). One train each 7 minutes, stop in Xativa station (2 euros ticket cost, 20 minutes trip). From Xativa station to the workshop site, are 1000 m. Go to the exit C. Ribera. Walk by Calle Ribera, Plaza Ayuntamiento, Calle Maria Cristina, Plaza Mercado and Calle En Colom (please, not confuse with Calle Colon) to Plaza Horno San Nicolas. Time walking about 12 minutes. [See route in Google Maps Please note that the route in Google Maps is for car; walking you must go by the streets listed above]. Remember some words: Street is Calle or Carrer. Square is Plaza or Plaça. If your luggage is heavy, you can take a taxi (3 minutes trip, prize 4 euros) or take the bus number 7 at the bus stop near McDonalds (ticket 1,10 euros) and leave the bus at the first stop of Calle Quart - Plaza del Tossal. The workshop site is 2 minutes walking by Calle Caballeros and Plaza Esparto to Plaza Horno San Nicolas. But always is faster to go walking than in bus.

By train.
You will arrive to Valencia Termino (Estació del Nord - Estación del Norte). You can reach the workshop site as explained above, exiting from rail station by main gate, go right (you can see the Arena) and cross the Xativa Street to the corner of McDonalds and then walk by Calle Ribera....

By Bus

You will arrive to the Central Bus Station. Take the bus number 8 in front of the station and leave the bus in the stop of Plaza de la Reina (ticket 1,10 euros). You see here the Cathedral of Valencia and the Miguelete Tower.  The workshop site is 4 minutes from Plaza Reina, walking by Calle Correjeria, Calle Calatrava, Calle Cadirers and Plaza Horno San Nicolas.

By Car

The old City Centre of Valencia has very narrow streets and few places of parking. The best is to park in a public parking (prize 2 euros/hour, 20 euros/day). If you have a GPS go to "Plaza del Horno de San Nicolas" by the fastest route, that is the best and easy route. And the nearest parking is "Parking Oeste - Parcent", only 550 m driving by Calle Danzas, turn right to Calle Ercilla, turn right to Plaza Mercado, turn left to Calle Vieja de la Paja, left to Plaza de la Ciudad de Brujas and the entance of the parking is in the corner of this Plaza with Calle Calabazas, at the left, near the entrance of the Central Market of Valencia. [See route in Google Maps]  Walking from the parking to the workshop site is only 350 m, crossing beside the Market, to Plaza del Mercado and Calle En Colom (attention, not confuse with Calle Colon) . You can see the great colorful of the market, with fruits, vegetables, fish and seafood.

Another parking is located in Plaza de la Reina. only 650 driving by Calle Danzas, turn left to Calle Purisima and right to Calle Correjeria. Now you are in Plaza de la Reina. To enter to the parking drive to the spiral ramps turnig to the center of the square. [See route in Google Maps]  Returning to the workshop site is 4 minutes walking by Plaza Reina, Calle Correjeria, Calle Calatrava, Calle Cadirers and Plaza Horno San Nicolas.

If you do not have a GPS, the main entrance to Valencia from Europe is AP-7 and V-21. You will arrive to Avenida Cataluña and you will see in front a Rotunda with a sculpture of a horseman from Anna Hyatt Huntington called "The torch bearer". Go right to Avenida Blasco Ibañez. At the end, you will see in front Jardines del Real Garden; go left to General Elío, and right to Calle San Pio V. You will see at left the Turia Garden and at right the Jardines del Real Garden.

At the end of the Jardines del Real Garden, you will see the building of the Art Museum of Valencia San Pio V. And at the left hand, at the other side of the Turia Garden, the Serranos Towers, and old Gate of the Valencia Walls. Here you must cross the Serranos Bridge over the Turia Garden, going front to Serranos Towers. Take the way right beside the Towers and drive in Calle Serranos, rear the Towers.

At the end of this street you will see in the left the Generalitat Palace, site of the Regional Government of Valencia. You must turn to right by the Calle Caballeros and drive 500 m turning to the left to Plaza del Esparto, just in the corner of Cafe Sant Jaume, and arriving to Workshop site in Plaza Horno San Nicolas. [See route in Google Maps]
If you are coming from East by A-3 or South Spain by N-332 or A-7, you must go by main ways to Serranos Towers and continue the way by Calle Serranos as explained above.
