VALENCIAN PORCELAIN

Nalda. Caballos

These pages collect studies on Valencian artistic porcelain, and some related topics, some published in different media and other originals, which live only on the web www.uv.es/ten.

Publications on the Valencian theme were practically non-existent until now. Some scattered data are provided in doctoral dissertations and in books on contemporary artistic ceramics. The three Lladró brothers, directly or indirectly, published various books about themselves or their company. About the other protagonists, alive or already deceased, hardly anything has been published. Of some of the most famous artists for his other works, such as Vicente Beltrán or Juan Bautista Llorens, except for some insignificant reference, everything related to his work in porcelain was unknown.

This is undoubtedly due to the dramatic scarcity of sources. Documents in public archives are counted, except for some administrative ones. The private ones of the studied companies either do not exist or remain closed to scholarly study.

Other published sources remain, especially sales catalogs and advertisements, in which Lladró, and to a lesser extent Cerámicas Hispania, collect part of his production, sometimes with identification of authors and dates.

The public or private collections contribute with the objects that have been preserved. Their essential study documents material, although partially, the activity of the protagonists of our history.

It is still worth considering another source. Due to the reference dates, all the last generations of protagonists of the golden age of Valencian porcelain, between 1943 and the end of the century, have not yet disappeared. It is also accessible, in the descendants and workers of those, the memory of their disappeared persons. Oral History can still provide invaluable information on the circumstances surrounding that golden age.

Antonio Ten Ros, nephew of the last person in charge of Nalda's artistic section, Amparo Ros Puig, who died in 1971, received and collected, from 1967 to 1971, abundant personal information on Amparo's daily work in Nalda and the lives of the protagonists of the daily history of the company.

He met Ramón Inglés Capella shortly before his separation from Nalda and the beginnings of his solo career, and  followed his artistic and business career. In the years before 2020, when her sister and collaborator Fina Inglés disappeared, he had informal talks with her about her memories, partly recorded, which constitute invaluable first-hand testimonies.

He was also lucky to establish a good relationship with Juan Lladró Dolz and hold long and relaxed conversations with him about his life and his companies, also largely recorded and preserved in his archive.

Lastly, he met Alfonso Pastor Moreno, son of one of the last owners of Cerámicas Hispania and technical director of Lladró and Nalda, who told him about his memories.

Finally, he has held various historical and technical conversations with Enrique Mestre, the famous ceramist from Alboraya, and his wife Ana Beltrán, one of Lladró's first workers at its factory in Almácera.
