The first conference of climate change and territory experts started on 30 January with the lecture "Current status of the issue (sea temperature, droughts, rains, fires, heatwaves and risks...)". The main and most visible manifestation of climate change is global warming, surface air and waters temperatures, in this particular case, of the Mediterranean. In the last decades, the temperature has increased by one and half degrees.
The lecture gather climate change evidences and made some recommendations. Firstly, the need to create an observatory which addresses the study and the prevention of weather risks in the context of climate change. Secondly, the rise of temperatures is a fact which obliges public administrations to help those who are more vulnerable. The elderly, who often suffer from energy poverty and do not stand well tropical and torrid nights, become weaker and their morbidity and mortality increases. Moreover, they urged the creation of rapid and effective action plans in case of emergency. Prepare the population with emergency response exercises to know how and when to act in case of flooding.
Geographical knowledge is crucial to know how nature works and how to act in the face of nature’s dangers. Lastly, it is vital to support climate and weather research. Humans, as part of the climate system, must act to improve sustainability, reduce resource consumption and emissions.
In this panel discussion participated Javier Martín Vide, Roberto Serrano, Miquel Grimalt, María José López, María José Estrela y Samira Khodayar.
