The danger of Major Forest Fires

  • Office of the Vice-Principal for Culture, Sports, and Social Bond

For the first Expert Conference on Climate Change in the Iberian Mediterranean, fires and forest territory evolution were also addressed. Forest fires are a repeated perturbation and Mediterranean landscapes are not the exception to the phenomenon.

The actual problem are Major Forest Fires (Wildfire). There exist two main causes that lead to wildfires (changes in soil use and cover, and climate change). These two causes influence the change in the fire regime, resulting in larger areas burnt down, more and stronger wildfires that ca happen any time.
Among the recommendations are: including the risk of wildfires in territory planning along with cartographies; promoting multifunctional landscapes (with mosaic shaped landscapes alternating forests, crops and open areas); resilient infrastructure designed and use of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS); developing laws, public policies for forest management, education and community participation.
