Course II: Strategy and internationalization

Course Description

This is a doctoral seminar that will introduce participants to selected current research frontiers in international business and strategy. Instead of aiming at providing broad overviews of research traditions and perspectives, this seminar focuses on just a few specific areas of research, which will be treated in depth.

The objectives of the seminar are to expose participants to the 'state of the art' in the theory and research in specific streams of international business and strategy; and, to assist participants develop the skills required to evaluate, critique, and contribute to research in international business and strategy.

Course outline

Session 1 (Tuesday). Headquarters and subsidiaries in modern multinational enterprises (MNEs). In this part of the seminar we will deal with issues such as headquarters-subsidiary relations in MNEs, subsidiary roles and development, and corporate footlooseness.

Session 2 (Friday). Re-conceptualizing foreign operation modes. In this part of the seminar we will extend the traditional analysis of entry mode choices to deal with their dynamics and combinations.

Professor Gabriel R.G. Benito

Gabriel R. G. Benito is Professor at BI Norwegian Business School, Oslo, Norway. He is also Dean of the school's PhD Program. He holds doctorate and master degrees from the Norwegian School of Economics, and a master degree from BI Norwegian Business School. His previous affiliations include Copenhagen Business School. He has also held visiting appointments at the University of Valencia, University of Melbourne, and Technical University of Lisbon.

Professor Benito is a former President of EIBA (European International Business Academy) and was a longtime member of its Board. He is a Consulting Editor of Journal of International Business Studies, and sits on the editorial boards of Global Strategy Journal, International Business Review and Management International Review. His research has particularly dealt with foreign direct investment, the structure and behavior of multinational enterprises and their foreign subsidiaries, and foreign operation modes.
