worried about Science Ethics? 19.11.2024 Clarivate removes another 2000 researchers from the list of "highly cited researcher" (HCR, with a total of ca. 'top-cited' 7000), see their analysis. After the former removals (2023: 1000, 2022: 500, 2021: 300), this makes a staggering total of 35% of removed HCR researchers! Self-evidently, Clarivate is frightened to death: selling numbers is their business model, and if people game the system unnoticed, their numbers are not worth a penny...

worried about Science Ethics? 31.01.2024: according to a recent report in the journal 'Science', the recent removal of 1000 researchers from Clarivate's HCR list concerns the entire field of mathematics, due to the formation of a citation cartel
(read more), pushing unknown authors of irrelevant papers into the HCR list.
Apparently, Clarivate is mortally terrified to loose it's business model, as 'citation gaming' becomes a popular 'sport' among certain researchers, fulfilling Goodhart's law.
Citation Cartels are found also in other fields and countries, see e.g. Clarivate Crackdown on Biochar Citation Cartel'' ...for our own research field, take a look also at these profiles (example-1, example-2), to conceive a qualified opinion.

12.12.2023 More than 10,000 research papers were retracted in 2023 — a new record, R. worried about Science Ethics? 24.11.2023 Clarivate removes +1000 researchers from the list of "highly cited researcher" (HCR), see their analysis,
and the article in El País. Already, in 2022, Clarivate removed 500 researchers, and 300 in 2021. Thus the total amount of removed HCR researcher amounts staggering 21%!
10.11.2023: seven researchers from IMDEA Nanoscience are listed among the co-called "2% most influential" in the 2023 update of the original 2019 survey by Ioannidis et al. The list also includes group leader JG [subfield Chemical Physics; 0.8% (#9 in ES) in 2022, 1.6% for the entire career], read more
...but caution: lists based on citation indices can – as all quantitative measures – be manipulated by authors, here in particular through scientific hyperproduction (inter alia by AI-assisted 'salami papers' and 'honorary' authorships), excessive self-citation and citation cartels (of authors a/o institutions a/o journals), which are in fact increasingly seen in the community...
...therefore, Clarivate's predictable statement that "highly cited researchers have demonstrated significant and broad influence reflected in their publication of multiple highly cited papers over the last decade" becomes increasingly erroneous, evidently fueling scientific misconduct by creating revenants (German: "Wiedergänger") of such 'highly-cited researchers' as a grotesque farce...

Memorandum on the unreflected use of the Impact Factor (IF):
In light of the recent developments where eminent journals in (Chemical) Physics are now considered as undeserving publication media because they don't belong to "Q1", I would like to remind the following points: 1. The IF measures short- but not long-term impact; as the IF measures only citations of the first two years after publication: is this what science should be - "twitter" notes in the knowledge of mankind? What about long-term impact? - praised researchers of the past would not receive a position nowadays as the IF decides on careers... What about knowledge whose relevance will be realized in maybe 10 or 100 years? As the IF may decide on funding, such results may never be discovered. 2. The journal IF is not the researcher's IF, and it's wrong to assume that they are necessarily correlated - and, what is preferred: to have 10 citations in a Q1 journal or 200 in a Q2 ? 3. The IF can easily be manipulated by journals: e.g. by regularly publishing reviews, which usually get much more citations than regular articles; so don't be fooled. 4. The journal's IF is a self-fulfilling prophecy, as researchers tend to cite these journals more often to better sell their own work. 5. Not surprisingly, the IF tends to increase with time as the overall number of papers and citations increase; this is only partly compensated by the appearance of new journals, and is less exciting than the notorious overwhelming annual announcements of the newest IF. 6. Finally, what really surprises is that IFs are given with 5 digits: where is the significance? ...it's like scientists forget their lessons in variables' uncertainty if they look at the emperor's new clothes resp. IF. p.s. I will not start about... citation cycles, or the trend to cite papers (of friends or mentors) of the last five years instead of the original works, or endless rediscoveries of the wheel by un-/consciously ignoring decades of research... but it should be at least mentioned in this context. Economization of science tends to become total: initiated by decision makers in industry and politics, infiltrating the minds of the researchers to finally make them loose their only dignity left, scientific honesty. 20.07.2016: Watching the news on Turkey, one might remember Michael Polanyi (1891-1976)... Such self-coordination of independent initiatives leads to a joint result which is unpremeditated by any of those who bring it about. Any attempt to organize the group ... under a single authority would eliminate their independent initiatives, and thus reduce their joint effectiveness to that of the single person directing them from the centre. It would, in effect, paralyse their co-operation"
