Junt amb el progressiu augment que hi ha hagut en els últims anys respecte a l'esperança de vida als països desenvolupats, també s’ha donat un major increment de la incidència de malalties associades a l’envelliment com demència, cardiopaties o càncer. A tot això se sumen altres factors com l’aïllament o la falta de suport social que incrementa la vulnerabilitat de les persones en aquesta etapa de la seua vida.

The use of psychoactive substances is a cultural practice existing since the dawn of time. This habit is very rooted to our understanding of life. Every society’s drug use helps understand the internal mechanism of the society. We may not therefore understand the world view of a civilisation without studying its drug use and abuse.
