Behavioral Observation Methods

This session provides an overview of behavioral observation methodology, focusing on the various decisions to be made in using systematic observation. Various aspects of the methodology are illustrated in the second half of the session through the presentation of three separate empirical studies of teams.

More than a Feeling: Rapport and Synchrony in Teams

Paper Abstract -- Rapport in interpersonal interaction has been studied from communication and psychology perspectives, but rarely in cooperative team settings with measurable performance outcomes. In this study, we investigate three components of rapport – mutual positivity, liking, and synchrony – and their relationship to performance and interaction patterns in aviation flight crews. Our results indicate that crews with pilots reporting higher levels of the three rapport components after a flight simulator training session performed better than other crews, and that of the three components, synchrony was most highly related to performance. Additionally, those crews reporting higher levels of synchrony engaged in more complex interaction patterns as compared to crews with lower synchrony. Implications for theory and team management are discussed.
