From 18 to 21 March 2026, the FonUrMed project took part in the international congress “The Historical Ear: What is Auditory History?” hosted in Paris, in the framework of the opening meeting of the IMS Study Group Auditory History.
In this event, researcher Ferran Escrivà Llorca presented a communication on “Teaching Music History through the Phonosphere: Written Auditory Experiences in Early Modern Valencia”, focused on the need of reviewing the use, often excessively extensive and uncritical, of the concept soundscape. It was also focused on the proposal of the phonospheres as a useful tool to think about the historical listening experiences since musicology. This closeness allows studying in more detail not only in what was being played in the past, but also in how it was being heard, in how the listening experience was described and how it became established in written sources.
Moreover, the participation in the congress allowed to connect this line of work with other relevant contributions to music history, sound, space, and listening in historical research, as well as talking with experts of different fields such as sound history, sound studies, history of art, heritage or sound engineering.
From FonUrMed, we have a positive view of this experience, for both scientific quality of the congress and for the opportunities to contrast, learn, and broaden the academic network in a field of full expansion.

This project, Sound Cities. Urban Phonospheres of the Mediterranean (1500-1900) (FonUrMed), continues the research made by the Emerging Group “Ciudad sonora. Música, sonido y ruido en Valencia (1609-1813)” [CIGE/2021/165], which has consolidated significant results in the proposed area: the study, under the perspective of urban musicology, of how urban music and culture evolved in Valencia between the expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609, and the absolutist restoration of 1813 with the entrance of Fernando VII to Valencia.
